The Performing Arts Center Experience something real. World-class performing arts on the campus of Purchase College, SUNY
(134)

The Performing Arts Center, Purchase College, a four-theatre complex, is the major professional, non-profit arts presenter in the Southeastern New York--Southwestern Connecticut region, and the largest program in the SUNY system. Each theatre is specifically designed for the optimum presentation of a different type of performance, enabling the presentation of any kind of event. The Center presents

a broad range of performances that engage, challenge, and educate as well as entertain, offering music, dance and theatre to audiences from Westchester and the surrounding communities. Music presenting features leading artists of our time as well as emerging artists; as the major regional presenter of dance, programs have included only area appearances of several important traditional, contemporary, and folkloric companies; theatre presentations reflect a deep commitment to presenting innovative ensembles. The Center’s on-going initiatives also encompass artist partnerships, residency activities, and commissions; creating opportunities for students to participate in the artistic process; increasing educational opportunities in the arts for k -12 students and multi-generational learners; and revitalizing efforts in the community to make the arts more accessible to broad and diverse audiences.

“There are studies that show that engaging with art lowers your cortisol level, and it reduces the stress hormones that are released into your body,” says Adrienne Hundley, head of service development and delivery at the Atlanta-based Art Pharmacy.

Who couldn't use a little stress reduction these days?

In some places, doctors can even "prescribe" art to help with anxiety and depression.

When it comes to dance, The Purchase PAC is on the cutting edge.

Doug Varone and Dancers To My Arms / Restore had its first performance here on March 16. Read Carla Escoda's review in Bachtrack via the link below.

And coming up on April 6, experience two more premieres, this time from choreographers Rena Butler and Keerati Jinakunwiphat, performed by the consistently excellent A.I.M by Kyle Abraham.

Say you saw it here first.

A gripping, if occasionally puzzling, evening from Doug Varone. Stunning even with recorded music. And next weekend the music will be live!

Say you saw it here first.
On March 16, Doug Varone and Dancers will present an exclusive first performance of To My Arms / Restore at The Purchase PAC - and we've got $10 tickets for Purchase College, SUNY students!

Student rush tickets will be available at the box office on Saturday 6:30-7:30pm only, with a valid MORE card.

To My Arms/Restore is an evening-long two-part work that embodies Varone’s choreographic fascination with the interplay of the deeply emotional and the immensely physical. To My Arms (Part 1) is a suite of eleven dances set to operatic arias by Georg Fredric Handel, evoking a strange otherworld of intimacy. Restore (Part 2) is driven by the 21st-century sound of Festival Voices and Nico Bentley’s Handel Remixed, which fuses Handel’s Dixit Dominus with beats more commonly heard in clubs around the globe. The result is a marriage between a score and a dance that is unabashedly glorious. Experience it!

But the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world to stop, and the premiere did not take place. Fortunatley, we did have some rehearsal footage, and used it to put together this brief behind-the-scenes video.

Enjoy the video, and then come join us tomorrow to see Doug Varone's newer new work, To My Arms/ Restore. Tickets are still available: https://www.artscenter.org/events/doug-varone-and-dancers/
