We would like to shine a spotlight on Anna Julia Cooper. She was born into slavery at Haywood Hall in 1858. Anna then went on to get a great education and is recognized for her achievements as an activist for civil rights and education and is honored with a stamp (on display in Haywood Hall’s library). We now proudly hang Anna’s portrait up in Haywood Hall’s library as her legacy carries on!

Haywood Hall has 225 years of rich history. Fun fact- There are hand-carved architraves where the wooden pineapple and apple hang. The apple is original, but the pineapple is a reproduction.

Over the last few years, we have donated lots of food to Logan’s “One Stop Garden Shop”’s Plant a Row for the Hungry in partnership Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.

One of our volunteers, Benbury, always tends to the garden and manages the donations. To thank him for his efforts, we presented him with this sign in 2022 that will remain in the garden bed. Thank you so much for your service to Haywood Hall and the community.
