I no longer share sessions (or sneak peeks) on social media immediately, and I really love it.
I used to. There was a time when I would have sneak peeks posted 24 hours or less after shooting a session. As my process evolved in multiple ways, I moved away from that. Here’s why:
1. In most sessions, I’m shooting 80-90% film. This means that most (if not all) of your best images are on film, + I don’t get your film scans back for a couple of weeks. So if I opt to share sneak peeks, you’re not seeing your best images, + I’m not representing the work I created for you accurately.
2. You see your images for the first time in a slideshow set to music at your ordering appointment. This moment + experience is not nearly as exciting or as impactful if I’ve already shown you a good portion of your gallery. When you watch your slideshow, you’re experiencing the story of your family and of your session, and it can be *very* moving. But if you’ve already seen your photos, the anticipation and emotion isn’t quite as good for you.
3. In regards to not sharing sessions on social media as soon as I can, this was born out of my Instagram break. I’ve really valued sitting with the art I’ve created before subjecting it to the opinions of my social media audience.
You have no idea how deeply what other people say about your art can impact how you feel about it, and how it impacts how you shoot moving forward until you remove it.
The way I shot and approached sessions evolved when I removed the audience on my Instagram break, and it was really good for me.
So now, I take time to love the photos and confirm that I’m walking in my purpose as an artist before taking in what anyone else says about them.
Every one has to find their own rhythm in this aspect of business, and the answer is different for each artist. But don’t continue doing something just because everyone else is doing it. It may not actually be what’s best for you. 🤍
