The unplanned moments tend to be the ones where we find the most life and joy in a photo gallery.

But being able to capture those unplanned, in-between moments requires to.... you guessed it... SLOW DOWN.

If you’re hyper focused on running through a shot list, nailing this pose that you saw on Instagram, you’ll miss the moments. You won’t be able to see them.

The in-between moments demand that you pause. They demand that you observe. They demand that you be present.

And you’ll struggle to do any of that if you’re only married to a vision of what you want to create.

This carousel includes many unplanned moments that add to the overall story in a way that wouldn’t have happened with only the shots that I had planned out. Which is your favorite?

I’ve LOVED the look and feel of film images for as long as I can remember, but the thought of learning to shoot it was…daunting to say the least. You can’t see the image on the back of your camera right after your take it, after all! So there’s this intimidating uncertainty that accompanies learning to shoot it.

Just like the uncertainty we feel when we’re “taking too long” or moving through life more slowly, more intentionally.

We’re seemingly always taught to rush. To do more. To be “productive” at all times. But slowing down is way more valuable than we give it credit for. That’s where clarity, joy, and creativity really begin.

Shooting film showed me that. Each frame takes thought. Each moment demands presence. And the same is true for life, how we show up for our family, our work, our art.

When we slow down, we notice the details we’d otherwise miss. We hear the laughter, see the small gestures, feel the connection. We create from a place of intention, not autopilot.

This is what I want for every photographer I work with, and for myself, every single day. To step out of the rush, step into the life you’re actually living, and let your art, and your heart, catch up.

Who else is making a conscious effort to slow down?

Fifteen years ago, I was a corporate employee who shot $50 sessions on weekends.

I was too scared to bet on photography. Too scared to raise my prices. Too scared to turn anyone down.

For years, I equated busy with successful. Overbooked calendars with good business. Exhaustion with dedication.

The wake up call came in fall 2022.

Twin babies. Four kids total. A calendar packed with 30+ sessions. An editing queue that felt endless.

I was making more money than ever and had never been more miserable.

I was snapping at my boys. Creating work that was fine but not great. Running on fumes while telling myself this was just “what it takes.”

That season woke me up.

I realized no amount of money was worth missing out on being the mom I was created to be. No client was worth sacrificing my family’s peace.

So I did the scariest thing I’d ever done in business.

I doubled my prices. Cut my calendar in half. Went in home exclusive.

I lost clients. Made the same money with half the work. But more importantly, I found my soul again.

I started creating the art I had always known I was capable of. The kind that makes families cry when they see their gallery. The kind that captures not just how they look, but who they are.

And when other photographers started asking how I did it, I knew I had to teach them.

Because you deserve to find your own artistic voice. You deserve to build a business that’s deeper than photos. You deserve to create from a place of meaning, not just survival.

The families you’re meant to serve are waiting for the art that only you can create.

What a summer day at home with three littles should feel like - nostalgia, wonder and joy. 🥰

Photographers - have you thought about the *feel* you’re most trying to communicate through a gallery you deliver to your clients?

Or are you thinking more about running through a list of poses that are safe and always work?

The former is a vital step to becoming an *artist* while the latter is more likely to leave you in photographer territory.

Which category do you fall in? Tell me in the comments!

Your life experiences can (and should) strongly influence how you photograph.

For me, having twins four years ago was simultaneously a blessing and one of the most difficult seasons I’ve walked through.

When I look back on images from the first few months after they were born, it’s the raw snapshots that pull me in, that bubble the emotions up from within me.

They’re images that are difficult to look at sometimes, because of the emotions they bring to the surface.

But part of those emotions include a quiet strength that’s grown, perseverance and redemption because of what we walked through in that season.

This is a big part of the reason that pretty photos don’t do it for me... because they don’t bear the weight of the honesty and reality.

This life experience has and continues to shape who I am as an artist.

It’s what moves me towards inserting myself less and less into moments in a session.

It’s what influences me to pose less and lean into what’s unfolding in front of me.

It’s what compels me to photograph who my clients are right now instead of projecting my own vision onto them.

Because I’ve learned from experience that the images that *truly* increase in value over time are the ones that depict the truth and honesty of the season they’re in - the images that act as an elevated snapshot of real life.

Not the images where you don’t recognize the person in it.

And so, I continue to evolve as an artist. ❤️

What life experience has shaped how you photograph others? Tell me in the comments! 🤍

I took my 7-year-old to practice golf this weekend. Watching him made me think…

We all know athletes can’t show up on game day without practice or prep. So why do we treat our art any differently?

When we show up unprepared - relying on the same poses, the same prompts, winging it in unfamiliar spaces, hoping to get lucky -we limit what’s possible.

Prep doesn’t kill creativity. It frees it. It builds trust with clients, gives you strategy for each unique family, and leaves less to chance.

Just like golfers learn the course before they play, we should get to know our families and spaces before we shoot.

The best athletes don’t wing it. Neither do the best artists.

Client: “I don’t want a typical newborn session.”

Me: “SAY LESS.”

I knew these were my people during the consult call when Mom shared these words with me.

She wanted to wait until her daughter was outside of the 2-3 week window. She wanted to go outside in the garden in their yard. She didn’t want it to fit the predictable “mom in a neutral dress standing in the nursery” lifestyle mold.

And that’s something I’m here for.

In fact, if you do want something predictable, I’m probably not your gal. 😉

Which of these images 1-15 is your favorite? Tell me in the comments!

What an honor to be featured in Summer 2025 magazine!!

Each of these images chosen to be printed in this issue are images that I’ve held near and dear to my heart as an artist.

They’re images that aren’t just beautiful but hold depth and connection.

And to have them featured, to have them recognized, seen and appreciated in the same way I do, brings me so much joy!

Thank you, TKP, for including me!!
