I love the Black Excellence Celebration at my school every year, it is a vibe. This past weekend, we celebrated exceptional Black Scholars throughout the many schools in our Central Valley region of campuses.

I love that it is a celebration of us and it lets us celebrate music and dancing and spirit and joy. We do so much as teachers and to see students who are not always represented or recognized in traditional education systems get to show how they are flourishing brings me so much joy.

Now to this baby pictured with me, I love all of my students with my whole heart. This baby right here is the definition of Black Excellence for me this year. She is brilliant, she is loving, she is kind, she is caring, she is assertive, and she always comes back from a challenge even stronger, even more brilliant, and better adapted for life. If you don’t see the potential in your students, if you don’t fight with every fiber of your being to make them the most successful they can be, if you don’t challenge them every day to grow with high standards, you need to do more.

Education is not to be played with and it was withheld from so many for so long, and in someways it still is. Everyone deserves the right to be educated, to be taught to think critically, to step into the world with a strong sense of self and to never stop wanting to learn and understand more.

Every person should be helped encouraged and shown ways to have the utter, complete, unadulterated audacity to believe in themselves and all of their potential.

His fight and legacy resonates still. We are living in a time of civil unrest, something I keep hoping we can evolve past, but here we are. There is a right and a wrong side of history. Spread his word. March in his name. Teach your children to grow up with a heart full of love and change this world.

This year, this message hits differently, this nation still has so much growing to do and still has people who need to learn to see the humanity in others.
