Good morning Red Bluff, we are 11 Days to Round-Up! If you missed the photos of our recent arena improvements, here’s a beautiful shot from RBRU Director David Ramelli 📸

A new coat of paint was applied to the sky boxes, the day boxes, and the concrete walls on the north and south ends. And these are the new bucking chutes!

Before installing the chutes, the ground in front of and underneath them was regraded, to prevent water from ponding, said Ray Mueller, vice-president of operations at Outback Contractors, who did the work.

The old footings were removed and new concrete twelve-inch footing was poured the entire length of the chutes. About 25 cubic yards of concrete was used. Twelve inches of dirt sits on top of the concrete footings, so the horses and bulls in the chutes can stand on dirt footing instead of concrete.

The previous chutes were installed in the mid-1970s, Mueller said, and had served their purpose.

“They had a lot of metal fatigue,” he said. “We had been making periodic repairs and adjustments to them over the last five years, and we felt it was time to replace them, with something new that would last way into the future.”

The new chutes, which are Priefert brand, provide a safer environment for the ba****ck riders, saddle bronc riders, and bull riders, plus the Round-Up staff who work with those events.

“The new chutes ensure the safest environment possible for the animals and the cowboys and the Round-Up help,” Mueller, a director on the Round-Up board, said.

Keeping the animals safe is important, because of their value to their owners and to the rodeo industry in general. “If we can provide a safe environment with new chutes, it’s better for the stock contractors, to ensure the safety of their animals.”

The fences that lead from each end of the chutes were also replaced. Portable panels, which were used on the north end of the chutes, were replaced with solid pipe fencing.

We have some new additions to our Contestant Hospitality during the Red Bluff Round-Up!

As part of our Equine Wellness Center, we’ve invited two new vendors: Boujee Equine Therapy & Always Bodyworks. They will be providing Acuscope & Myopulse treatments and both human + equine massage therapy.

This is a huge addition to our Equine Wellness Center for pain management, injury recovery, and performance optimization.

The popular Saltwater Therapy Tub will be back as well! Plus ropes, boots, halters, bridles, etc., provided by B&R Tack, and custom cowboy boots by Skyver Bootmakers. Contestants can also access fresh hay, feed, shavings, and supplements through Reynold’s Ranch and Farm Supply.

Modern Cleaners is also back to provide on-site dry-cleaning services for those working or competing!

The idea of putting cowboys in costumes on rank horses was the brainchild of the legendary Cotton Rosser. In 2000, he pitched the idea of 𝙏𝙝𝙚 '𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙍𝙞𝙙𝙚' to then-President Frank Moore. Ever since, it has gained national recognition and a devoted fan base throughout the rodeo world.

— FAMILY TRADITION —

Red Bluff Round-Up has been family reunion gathering spot for six-plus decades
Red Bluff, Calif. (March 31, 2025) – On the third Sunday of April, Danny and Debbie Marshall know exactly where they’ll be.
It’s at the Red Bluff Round-Up.

The Marshall family has been in attendance at the Round-Up every single year since 1963. That’s 63 years straight, and four generations’ worth.

It all started in 1963, when Jack and Doris Marshall, Danny’s parents, took their three sons, including Gary and Larry, to the Round-Up. A few years later, they decided to make it a family tradition, inviting Doris’ two sisters, Nadine Keene and Nelda Dillman.
From there it grew to be a family reunion, with Nadine and Nelda’s kids and grandkids, all three of the Marshall brothers, their wives, kids and grandkids, and, of course, Danny and Debbie and their kids and grandkids.
And they’ve bought the same seats each year: the number one box, on the main grandstand side, the first box at the south end.

“We always say, we have the first box, closest to the food, to the bar, and to the bathrooms,” Marshall laughed. In that box, the family can see the start of the horse races, the grand entry, “and we have no obstructions in front of us. We might have inclement weather sometimes, but that doesn’t happen very often.”

Before they go to the Round-Up, the family gathers for a meal at Danny and Debbie’s house. Danny barbecues tri-tips, Debbie organizes, sets up and decorates, sister-in-law Liz makes her “famous” beans, and family and friends bring side dishes and desserts.

“We set tables up in the backyard, and everybody sits around and visits. It’s quite an undertaking but it’s a blast.”

After the rodeo, they congregate back at the house to visit more. “We’re a very tight-knit family,” he said. “We like each other.”
They wear pink on that day as well, because Sunday of Round-Up is Tough Enough to Wear Pink day.

“I’m kind of a macho guy,” he said. “I don’t like pink, but we all wear pink.” He and Debbie knew Jolene Kemen, a former Round-Up director who passed away in 2019 and in whose honor Pink day is held.

“Red Bluff is a small enough town where everybody knows everybody, and we knew Jolene. We’re into it.”

Danny, better known as “Tractor Dan,” retired from a thirty-year career with Raley’s Grocery Stores. After retirement, he began a tractor service job, mowing, floating roads, rototilling, and more.
He and cousin Kathie Whitesell, Nadine Keene’s daughter, work together to keep the tradition going. He loves that the family gets together.

“My entire family has not missed the rodeo,” he said.

Now the fourth generation is attending the Round-Up, he and Debbie’s kids, their spouses, and their grandkids: daughter Rachael Kordzikowski, her husband Paul and their two children, and son Ross and his wife Becky, and their two children.
He loves it. The Marshall family has never missed a Sunday show at the Round-Up for the past 63 years.

“It’s a pretty special event to be at,” he said.

𝙍𝙊𝙐𝙉𝘿-𝙐𝙋 𝙍𝙀𝘾𝙍𝙐𝙄𝙏𝙎: Round-Up is retirement plan for Red Bluff transplants

When Gary and Liz Ramos moved to Red Bluff in 2017, they never thought they’d find a new passion.

The couple, who lived in San Mateo County for thirty years before Gary’s retirement from law enforcement, got involved with the Red Bluff Round-Up and now volunteers with it in a variety of ways.

It happened in a fortunate way.

Before retirement, Gary had perused real estate in Red Bluff, hoping to move here, but his wife wasn’t ready to leave the Bay area. The couple took a cruise, returning on the Saturday night of the Round-Up. Gary got a wild hair. “I told Liz, let’s go to the rodeo tomorrow, and she was like, no way, we just got home.”

But they came to the Round-Up and looked at the house for sale Gary had seen. It had been sold, so they looked at a second house on the market. They liked it, called the realtor who showed it to them, and as Liz walked through it, she said, “I love this place.” So they bought it.

“We fell into it, because of the rodeo, really,” Gary said.

After moving to town, they got involved with the Round-Up. With Gary’s background in law enforcement, he was a natural fit for the security committee. And with Liz’s interest in hospitality and decorating, she decorates for the four or five functions the Round-Up hosts every year, organizing the décor (often from repurposed items) for the Volunteer Appreciation meal, the functions at the downtown Round-Up Mercantile, and helping with the Tough Enough to Wear Pink luncheon.

During the rodeo, she, along with several other people, oversees the day boxes, making sure rodeo fans have drinks, food and popcorn.

In addition to security, Gary helps with parking, and this year, is on the livestock committee. During the rodeo, he’s on a four-wheeler, zipping from place to place, helping with problems and making sure things run smoothly.

The favorite project for the Ramos’, with the Round-Up, is the Golden Circle of Champions, an organization that provides an annual trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for a pediatric cancer patient. Each year, the Round-Up chooses a different child and his or her family to be the “golden champion.”

Ramos’s act as chaperone for the family when they make the trip to the National Finals Rodeo, spending four days making sure they are taken care of.

It’s special to them both. Their youngest son, Garrett, had a kidney transplant at age eighteen, so they understand the health issues children go through. And Gary has a brother with special needs. “It’s always been a soft spot in our hearts,” he said.

During the Round-Up, they’re too busy to watch it. “I go home and watch it on the Cowboy Channel,” Gary said. And their kids, including two other sons, two daughters-in-law, and three grandkids, like to visit during Round-Up week but know their parents won’t be around.

“Our kids come out rodeo week, and we say, you can stay at our house, and we might see you Sunday night,” Gary said, when the Round-Up is over.

But they love it.

“We’ve met tons of really nice, caring, friendly people,” Liz said. “We moved here and made great friends and have had good times. I feel very fortunate for that.”

“I really like the people associated with the Round-Up,” Gary said. “They took us in like we’d been here forever, and they treated us like family. I like that it’s a small town and the Round-Up is such a big part of the town. Everybody knows Red Bluff because of the Round-Up, and it’s just fun to be associated with that.”
