An 11X Wrangler National Finals Qualifier, Dakota Eldridge, Elko, Nev., finished 4th in the World in 2024. His win in Red Bluff had a time of 21.9 seconds on four head.
Red Bluff is a true cowboy competition for roping and wrestling. Timed events start as an even playing field with two rounds of โslackโ before the progressive rounds on Friday and Saturday.
Team Ropers, Tie-Down Ropers, and Steer Wrestlers make two runs between Wednesday and Thursday, then the 24 fastest cowboys come back to compete during the shows on Friday and Saturday.
The top 12 come back for the final round on Sunday, called the โshort round.โ Having won only $500 during Slack, Eldridge says he was coming back hungry.
โI felt like I made two good runs, just didnโt win any moneyโฆIt was one of those things. I had been here all week, and like you said, I was hungry. I had a dang good steer and a good start, almost too good of a start for that steer and a great horse.โ
The steer was โby far better than any other steer in the pen today,โ Eldridge added.
Like many bulldoggers, he was also on a borrowed horse. One he remembers only riding once before.
Eldridge left his horse โSwamperโ down in San Angelo so he could catch a quick flight to Red Bluff. He rode a bay gelding, called โBuzz,โ owned by fellow steer wrestler Sterling Lambert.
Feeling more at home in the California Circuit, he says itโs all worth it for the atmosphere at the Red Bluff Round-Up.
โItโs unbelievable here in Red Bluff. You get to put a straw hat on, have a little sweat rolling down your back, and go have a cold beer at the beer tent afterwards when you do good.โ
Eldridge said he loves the people and how welcoming everyone is in โthis cowboy town,โ but his favorite part of the Round-Up is the patriotism and โ... that flag coming down.โ
โIโve been to a lot of dang rodeos, and this one, you still get worked up when youโre back there for the short roundโฆ If itโs not on your bucket list, it should be.โ
