The flowers have struggled this season with little rain, extreme heat & humidity, but they’re coming along beautifully! I had some mid week orders I cut this morning and the vibrant colors are amazing!

Hardening off seedlings this week. Unfortunately, that pesty mouse in the greenhouse ate the tops of my newest celosias and the carpenter bees are dropping lots of sawdust. 😠
In spite of that, the seedlings are still doing great and I see beautiful cut flowers in the near future!

This time of year I’m starting various seeds every week.
A little glimpse into the process, including the almost microscopic seeds of some flowers, (these are not the smallest, but that’s all you get in that particular pack). Also, a bit of the growing process and the possible results when you miss watering them just one day. With some TLC I can bring them back, but it is a tedious process. Seedlings also get leggy if they’re not getting enough light or placed the right distance from the lights. If you catch it early enough it can be corrected. All of these seedlings will miraculously turn into beautiful cut flowers.
The last picture is “winter sowing”, seeds started outdoors in February.

The grow lights are bright and growing seedlings and the heat mats are warm and starting seeds .
Seed starting began in January. Mostly winter sown in jugs along with a few inside starts. Got another tray (about 15 different kinds) started today and placed on the heat mats. Looking forward to getting outside tomorrow when this wind dies down.

When I started this Asclepias plant from seed this past spring, I had no idea how many monarchs would enjoy it.
My all- time favorite homeschool science project with my children (for the last 22 years!) has been watching the monarch life stages….
I have a limited number of caterpillars I’d love to share if you would seriously like to watch the metamorphosis stages. They would need picked up today or tomorrow (at Broken Fences, Red Lion) as they are all a little larger than I usually start with. You will need a jar or insect container of some sort to keep them along with fresh milk w**d (I’ve often gotten that along a country road ). They will need to eat milkw**d until they go into the chrysalis stage. Usually between days 10 and 12 they emerge from the chrysalis as a beautiful monarch that you will need to release shortly after for its migration journey to Mexico.
