I grew up in Lufkin TX. I never questioned my family income. It was never a discussion. We ate home-made meals that consisted of meat, potatoes, and vegetables (which were not an optional option). No vegetables, no dessert!!! We didn't talk unless we were told, hence we were known as the silent generation. We never touch anything that wasn't ours. We never open a fridge at anyone's house unless we were asked. We were taught to respect other people's property. And we were rewarded for acting right.
We grew up during a time when we cut the lawn, pull weeds, babysit and help with all the household chores. No way they gave us everything we wanted. We used to go out a lot to play, run with friends, play hide-and-seek or ride bikes. We seldom sat inside.
Bottled water was unheard of. If we had a Pepsi, it was in a glass bottle and we didn't break the bottle when we finished. We saved the bottle for the money back.
We had to tell our parents where we were going, who we were going with and be home before dark.
You learned from your parents instead of disrespecting them and treating them like they knew absolutely nothing. What they said was LAW and you didn't question it and you better know it!. We watched what we said in the presence of our elders and neighbors because we knew that if we DISRESPECTED any adult, we would get a good beating, it wasn't called abuse, it was called discipline!
We held the doors for others and brought the shopping home. We gave our seat to an elderly person without being asked.
No bad words were heard on the radio, in songs or on TV.
“Please and thank you”, were part of our daily vocabulary!
The world we live in now is full of people who hate and disrespect others.
Friends, consider reposting if you are grateful for your childhood. I'll never forget where I came from and I just wish kids and people today had half the chances to have fun and respect real life we grew up in! And we never get bored!
Copied and pasted (change where YOU grew up). Got this from a good friend. This is exactly how I grew up and I totally agree!!.
