This Elks National Foundation Beacon Grant event turned out to be a night to remember. Redlands Lodge #583 hosted approx. 120 guests to a night out at the movies. It was our honor to provide an engaging evening for a population in our community that is often overlooked. Our guests consisted of adults born with brain injury and their caregivers, mentors, and family. Many thanks goes to those who made this evening a success: Chloe Broulliette, Jose, Carissa, and Josh from LOOK Cinemas who went above and beyond to to make this night run smoothly and make sure we had everything we needed; Hope Gutierrez who tirelessly invited all our guests through her connections to various organizations; and our wonderful Elks who helped dispense popcorn, soda, and napkins Bonnie Burks, Carl Keiser, Paul Beaumont, Lisa Hubbell, and Alex Clark.

Here is number two of four special events for Redlands Elks Lodge. This project was also funded by a grant from the Elks National Foundation just like the Christmas Shopping Spree for single moms. 11 members volunteered to rebuild a fence on behalf of Micah House Redlands on Oxford St. This was a much needed project as the old fence was dilapidated and the kids were not safe and secure to utilize this area of the premises. It took our members approximately five hours to tear down and rebuild a 92 LF fence today which I would consider to be record time! Many thanks to our project manager, Craig Crampton, for putting in hours of planning, preparation, and purchasing of materials. Another ENF grant funded project is in the books!

Today was an eventful day for the Redlands Elks Lodge. Here is just one event out of four happening today. This morning, 12 Elks and 5 Non-Elk volunteers descended upon the Redlands Target to take 14 struggling single moms Christmas shopping using grant funds from the Elks National Foundation . We had a total budget of $6747.47 and allotted each mom anywhere between $350 each up to $800 depending on the number of children she has. Needless to say, this meant the world to these moms as some of them couldn't afford gifts for their kids.
This is one of the most rewarding grant funded events we hold for both recipients and volunteers. Not only do we make a positive impact upon our community, but we also forge relationships with our moms and comradery among our volunteers. I also want to give a huge shout out to Mark Granich for being there with the Lodge debit card to take care of each transaction and to the store manager, German Garcia, for designating a check out lane to us, for providing an additional 5% off their entire purchase, and providing $10 gift cards for the moms to use on another day. Keep in mind, this is just one of four good things our Lodge was up to today.

The final Cooking Academy class for 2023: bananas foster over ice cream and cookies.
Many thanks to Randy Smith for preparing for and teaching this class. It’s no surprise that the kids loved it and ending with a dessert is a great way to finish the season. The kids were disappointed that we were done for 2023, but we are in good shape with our members who are already looking forward to next year’s class.

IMPACT GRANT EVENT #4 for 2023: Gas Tank Fill Up Day with breakfast and distribution of supply drive goods.
Saturday, October 21, the Redlands Elks filled up approximatly 30 Gas Tanks for Struggling Single Moms in our community. We also provided breakfast burritos, muffins, grapes, and coffee and we distributed the goods we received from our members during the supply drive over this past week. I have pasted below just one of the many expressions of gratitude from the moms we helped. We were a wee bit busy with the event which kept us from taking many photos, but we did capture a few.

"Yes, thank you SO much! That was such an awesome morning. Breakfast was delish and so fun seeing other moms to catch up & meet some for the first time in person.
What a treat, not only to have my gas tank filled up, but I can’t remember the last time I was able to just sit back and relax while someone else pumped my gas. ⛽️🙌🏼✨🥰"
HUGE THANKS TO Lisa Hubbell & Redlands Elks. 🙏🏼"

IMPACT GRANT EVENT: This grant is designated to helping struggling single moms and their children. On Sunday, August 6, 2023, we hosted 15 families to see a live performance of Frozen Jr. at the Yucaipa Performing Arts Center. The musical was performed by children 6 to 14 years of age and the children in the audience were mesmerized by it. A good time was had by all.

Here are some pics from Sunday's Impact Grant event: "Family Fun Paint Day with Lunch." The moms had a great time and won some prizes by playing a few "Minute To Win It" style games which included transferring cotton balls from one bowl to another using vaseline on your nose and the other was stacking Skittles on a tongue depressor.
Thanks to all the members who helped with this event: David Crow, Carlene Cutshaw, and Chris Petrotta were the kitchen crew, John Gorman, Joanie Meier, Cathey Hughes, Trisha Wright, and Lisa Hubbell were the set up crew, Craig Crampton helped serve the lunch.

May 2, 2023 was a night to remember at Redlands 583 as we recognized 18 candidates for our Youth Awards ceremony. The candidates were found among and recommended by our partner organizations of Boy Scout Troop 19, Redlands Young Marines, Micah House, and Redlands Boys and Girls Club. The criteria for their recommendations was based on the prinicples of our order: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. We asked that each organization recommend two candidates per principle, one from middle school and the other from elementary, and that they only provide a recommendation if they truly have a candidate that fits the corresponding principle. We had a full house with over 130 guests and the enthusiasm and excitement was palpable. Our young guests were so excited and proud when they received their certificates. Moreover, our Knights did a fabulous job of sharing their insights into the principles their stations represent.

Many thanks to everyone who made this night magical: Ronnie Beard, Robert Duron, Carl Keiser, Thom Gates, Joanne Beard, Ed Lucas, David Crow, Sylvia Jessup, Suzette Soboti, Jeff Endicott, Mike Simiele, Jamie Ramirez, Lisa Hubbell

Greetings fine members of Redlands 583,
Some very special news concerning a member of our Lodge has recently been drawn to my attention and it is something that deserves recognition and should be shared with all of our members. Last Saturday evening, January 7, 2023, our California-Hawaii Elks Association (CHEA) Southeast District Vice President, Larry Perez, and First Lady Mona Perez hosted a dinner for our CHEA State President, Brad Smith, and First Lady Agnus. Since I was unable to attend, I recently learned that one of our very own members received grand recognition from our CHEA President. Every state president establishes a theme to promote Elkdom and this year President Brad’s theme is “Brad’s Builders.” His emphasis is “Building up Elkdom” by focusing on key elements: membership growth, lodge food programs, community involvement, veterans’ assistance, etc…. The concept is likened to a construction site where a variety skills are needed to construct, maintain, or renovate a building. In order to drive the point home, President Brad and his team of V.P.’s wear hard hats during his visitations to the CHEA districts. Just as some “Builders” are entry-level workers and others are masters of their trade, President Brad gave recognition to one of those “masters of the trade” and it is our very own David Crow. Dave was awarded the President’s “Builders Champion” award and, alongside Dave, 3 other members of the SED were honored. Now the members of the Redlands Elks know what a dedicated Elk Dave is through his consistent volunteerism in the kitchen and the meals he prepares for us to enjoy, but quietly over the years others in the district and the state have also witnessed his dedication as an Elk in many ways. He works so hard to keep a top notch food program for our lodge and even volunteers at other lodges when they are in a pinch. His dedication to always serving the Veterans in the community along with our youth programs, as in the after school cooking classes at Micah house, is a shining example of Elkdom. Dave loves our country and he is a retired Veteran, and a dedicated husband and father. Many more attributes can be listed, but most of you know he is one outstanding Elk and now he is recognized as a “Champion Builder” in the California Hawaii Elks Association. Congratulations Dave, this is a well-deserved award and thank you for always making 583 shine in everything you do.

Many thanks to Chris Petrotta for the fantastic electrical work he performed at Steps 4 Life transitional housing for women in Redlands. He replaced a single overhead bathroom fan light with three new recessed lights. Chris Hubbell was on hand for moral support and to help clean up. Chris P. is our rock star of the day! Well done you two for getting this project started and I know the ladies truly appreciate the work being done on their behalf.

For those who are wondering about this project, this was the first phase of a complete bathroom renovation funded by the Elks National Foundation Gratitude Grant (say that five times fast!) Phase two will be underway soon.

Alas, here are pics from our final Cooking Academy Class for 2022. I am blessed beyond measure to be able to work alongside our wonderful members who made this program a reality.
Kudos to John Gorman who taught the students to make a chicken, zucchini, and mushroom stir fry served over rice. The aroma of all the fragrant ingredients had our mouths watering. I give Team 583 a round of wild applause!

Another cooking academy at Micah House has been successfully completed. David Crow taught the students a tasty Hot Links and veggies dish in a skillet. Due to time and equipment limitations, he premade Spanish Rice to round out the meal. According to the kids, the hot links were not so "hot", but they all loved it.

Kudos to the volunteers who keep this going: Craig Crampton, Chris Hubbell, Diane Kuehl, John Gorman, Joanie Meier, Lisa Hubbell. Thanks to Jamey Heiss for helping us load up at the lodge.
