The Beverly Hills Hotel, built in 1912, was the first business in town and most of the city’s original residents lived there. Honorary Mayor Will Rogers had a polo field next door, and after games, riders would enjoy a cocktail in the hotel bar. When Rogers died, the hotel named the bar in his honor, and the Polo Lounge was born. It soon became the preferred place for Tinseltown’s stars and dealmakers to see and be seen. The secret Hollywood romances conducted in the hotel’s secluded bungalows are legendary. The famous pool opened in 1938, complete with sand to make it feel like a real beach club. The hotel was painted its distinctive pink in 1948 and has been known as the Pink Palace ever since.
