COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING PROGRAM, 10 AM Thurs, Nov 28 at the Rexburg Tabernacle

The traditional Thanksgiving morning program will still be held in the historic Rexburg Tabernacle despite the renovations being done in and on the century old building.
“Where else could we have this wonderful annual Thanksgiving Celebration?” says Anna Bjornn, program coordinator. “We’ve been coming here on Thanksgiving morning for more than 30 years now,” she continues. “The Tabernacle fills with friends and neighbors who like to remember what this holiday is all about and pause to enjoy the hour of music and messages of gratitude. It is as nourishing as the feasting of food.”
The community choir, under the direction of Paul Busselberg of the BYUI music faculty, will present the majority of the program with Rachel Keppner, music/theater teacher at MJHS, presenting a seasonal narration. Other musical numbers will include a cello solo by Christian Allen; a vocal duet by Shane and Sadie Steel, a brass ensemble, and Kobin Harris, an 11-year-old organist from Salem, playing the 100-year-old Austin organ.
Of particular note are two of the choral numbers, of which Busselberg is the composer and also arranger of the music. Accompanists for the choir are Darian Larsen and Brendon Wheeler, with a small string ensemble assisting and other instruments to add variety to the program.
This traditional program has its beginnings in the early 1970’s with John Thompson offering an hour of thanksgiving messages for his church group. In 1992 the City of Rexburg took on sponsorship after Thompson’s retirement and has continued the musical gathering for the people of the Upper Valley. The program is free, and offers a place to gather and celebrate a needful holiday in stressful times. Bring family friends and neighbors to feast together.

Thank you, Kevin Call, Claire Thueson, Mark Seare, MHS Vocal Spectrum, and the amazing Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra for sharing the magic of Gershwin. Last night’s Gershwin Gala was “S’wonderful, S’marvelous!” We also appreciate Madison High School and our cultured community for their support of the Tabernacle Legacy Campaign. The event raised over $19,000 to help make the historic Rexburg Tabernacle Civic Center, home of our amazing orchestra, more accessible! If the building could talk, it might say, “Thank you Rexburg, for being ‘someone to watch over me.”

Join us November 20 at Madison Performing Arts Center for a lively and memorable evening. GERSHWIN GALA is presented by the Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra, with guest conductor Dr. Kevin Call, and many special guest performers—including Mark Seare.

Mark Seare is the current conductor of the RTOrchestra but will step into the spotlight as the clarinet soloist in “Walking the Dog” and that famous clarinet upward gliding scale for “Rhapsody in Blue.”

GERSHWIN GALA is a concert to benefit the Tabernacle Legacy Campaign. Significant funds are needed to preserve the beloved Rexburg Tabernacle, home to our elite community orchestra. Support this fundraising event and enjoy a fun date night! 1920s attire encouraged.

Tickets available at rexburgarts.org.

George Gershwin was a 20th century American composer and pianist. He composed in popular, jazz, and classical genres, and is considered one of the greatest American composers. In 1924 (100 years ago!) the age of 25, he composed his first and most popular major classical work “Rhapsody in Blue” which was conceived partly on a train ride to Boston. He said the early ideas came “on the train, with its steely rhythms, its rattle-ty bang that is often so stimulating for a composer.”
Enjoy the ride with the Rexburg Tabernacle Orchestra and other special guests as we pay tribute to the works of George Gershwin, and raise funds to preserve our own local treasure—the Rexburg Tabernacle.
