Winter tulips are here!! I am beyond ecstatic because I wasn’t sure if they would come in time for Galentine/Valentine’s Day. Check out their brilliant red color against the whiteness of the snow! I am in love! These are double tulips so they have more petals and a fuller looking bloom. Swipe to the third picture to see what they look like when they open up for you in your house. I’m taking orders now so send me a DM if you want to gift a loved one or yourself (because you deserve it!) a bouquet of these gorgeous VT grown flowers for Galentine/Valentine’s day!

January usually seems so long to me but this year for a whole host of reasons, January flew by. It has been bitterly cold in Vermont the last week but I have my amaryllis blooms to cheer me up. They are truly a joy in my house and in my office at work. This one is ‘Picasso’. I love the picotee edges, don’t you?

This is the final part to my series on amaryllis care.

In the fall after the first frost, cut off all of the leaves
right above the bulb. Bring the pot indoors and put it
in a cool dark place like your basement or heated
garage where the temperature will stay above freezing around 50-60F and leave the plant there for 8-10 weeks. Do NOT water the plant at all during this time. You may feel bad or worry your bulb will die but you want it to go into dormancy in order to develop flower buds inside the bulb.

After 8-10 weeks (sometime around December), you can bring the bulb into your house. Water it with some warm water and put it in a warm sunny spot. It will take a few weeks before you see the stem but be patient and do NOT overwater, especially when the stem is still short. If you follow these steps, your amaryllis will rebloom for you year after year.

So many times people buy amaryllis over the winter and after the last bloom has faded, they throw away the whole plant thinking it’s done. It’s such a shame because given the proper care, an amaryllis can get bigger with each year and even produce daughter bulbs! It is truly a long-lived perennial.

I hope you enjoyed this series on amaryllis. Please let me know if you have any questions below. 🥰

Happy new year, everyone! For the first time ever, I finally have red flowers blooming in my house just in time for Tet! This is Amaryllis ‘Olaf.’

To continue my series on amaryllis care, let’s talk about what you do when a bloom fades.

One stalk can have multiple buds flowering. As soon as one bloom fades, cut it close to the stalk to encourage more blooms to emerge. When all the buds on that stem are done blooming, cut the off the entire stalk to about 2 inches above the bulb. Do NOT cut the leaves! The leaves are there to make photosynthesis in order to nourish the bulb.

Continue caring for the bulb by putting it in a sunny window and watering it when the top inch of the soil is dry. This is also the time to start a monthly fertilizing regimen. Use any water soluble fertilizer. Once your last frost has passed, you can put the potted amaryllis outside in full to part sun so it can continue to grow big healthy leaves.

Stay tuned for the final section on how to get your amaryllis bulbs to rebloom!

Part 2 of my series on how to grow and care for amaryllis.

When you plant your amaryllis bulbs, it’s important that you plant them shallowly. Anywhere between half the bulb to 3/4 of the bulbs can be buried but no more than that or else you risk rotting the bulb. You should be able to see the shoulders of the bulb rise over the top of the soil.

Choose a pot that’s sturdy (terracottas are great) and only slightly bigger than your bulb because amaryllis likes tight spaces. When you water, try not to drip water onto your bulb, or else rot can occur. Instead water around the edge of the pot.

All the nutrients your amaryllis needs to bloom is in the bulb so you do not need to fertilize your plant during its flowering stage. Only water when the soil is dry to the touch.

The amaryllis shown here is “Blossom Peacock.” It just started to open for me this week and I am in love with the color and the double petals. It has 4 blooms on one stalk alone with another stalk coming. Unlike dahlias, with amaryllis, the size of the bulbs matter - the bigger the bulb, the bigger the show!

Stay tuned for part 3 when I show you how you can care for your amaryllis plant so it reblooms for you year after year!

When it’s cold outside and everything is covered in ice or snow, seeing the gorgeous fluffy blooms on this amaryllis instantly chases away my winter doldrums. This is ‘Amadeus’ and its one stem has 6 blooms and buds combined so the show will last for weeks. But did you know if you take care of the bulb properly, you can get it to rebloom year after year? I have two bulbs currently that have rebloomed for me for the past 7 years but I’ve heard of amaryllis bulbs lasting for over 60 years!

Stay tuned for my series on how to care for amaryllis bulbs!

Happy Small Business Saturday, everyone! It’s been a while and I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself.

My name is Fiona and I am the farmer-florist behind Pond Hollow Farm and Flowers. We are a woman-owned and operated small farm located in Richmond, VT and we grow specialty cut flowers that you typically won’t find in a grocery store such as local winter tulips and lilies, ranunculus, heirloom and Itoh peonies, garden roses, and dahlias.

We take particular pride in the fact that we practice regenerative farm techniques which means no pesticides or herbicides are ever sprayed on our plants.

Our bouquets are made up of flowers grown right here in Vermont so they are 100% local. We sell our flowers primarily through CSA subscriptions and made-to-order bouquets for special events.

During the summer when I’m not in the garden, I’m either coaching my 8 yr old’s soccer team or rushing my 11 yr old to his baseball game. Now that we’re entering into snow season, I’m split between getting ready for skiing with my sons or prepping my grow room for forcing amaryllis bulbs and winter tulips.

I really appreciate you following me on my flower farming journey and if you ever have any flower-related questions, I’d love to hear from you. Thank you for supporting small businesses like ours and for buying local flowers!
