Join us in celebrating twenty years of Javanese gamelan at Earlham on Saturday, April 27 at 7:30pm, Lingle Recital Hall, Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.

For this concert, our students will be joined by guest musicians in highlighting the varied traditional Javanese ensembles we have at Earlham. In addition to performing on the full central Javanese gamelan--consisting of many bronze gongs, metallophones, and other instruments, such as a flute, a bowed lute, a plucked zither, hand drums, and a xylophone--we will also be presenting a piece for gamelan sekatèn (a large, ceremonial bronze ensemble found only in the royal cities of Java and at Earlham), music for the calung (bamboo gamelan), and larasmadyå (unison choral singing accompanied by frame drums and tubular bells).

Free admission and no tickets are required.

Earlham Chamber Orchestra presents Days of Future Past: a concert of classical chamber music and new music for chamber orchestra and electronics, Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 pm in Lingle Recital Hall, Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.

The Earlham String Quartet plays an early quartet by W.A. Mozart (written when he was 16), and the Earlham Woodwind Quintet plays a classical piece for wind instruments by Mozart's contemporary, Anton Reicha. This will followed by two new works of electro-acoustic music. Director Forrest Tobey will perform solo, using a pair of infrared-emitting batons known as the Buchla Lightning, which in turn trigger electronic sounds generated on the computer. The effect is a performance in empty space. The concert will conclude with a work written for this concert called "even the darkest clouds are lighter than air," featuring the combined student groups performing in tandem with electronically generated sound.

Free admission and no tickets are required.

Join the Department of Theatre Arts for Fun Home, April 11-13.

Fun Home is first Tony Award-winning musical written entirely by women, explores how Alison, a cartoonist now the same age as her father when he died, sifts through haunting childhood memories. Adapted from the best-selling graphic novel memoir by Alison Bechdel, this groundbreaking, refreshingly honest musical illuminates how a family can be understood through grown-up eyes. As adult Alison recreates memories of her youth and college experiences, her reflections on playing airplane, the family-run funeral home, her enigmatic father’s obsessions, coming out, and the subsequent discovery of family secrets intertwine to create a new, more balanced perspective and a greater understanding of her own identity.
