Today is Strick’s birthday.

Last year when I posted this picture I had no idea the next time I would see it would be at his brother Matt’s funeral.

I was supposed to go to Matt’s funeral with Suit but he couldn’t make it.

So I went alone.

If you had told me the next funeral I would go to after Matt’s would be Suit’s, I wouldn’t have believed you.

Knowing that these brothers, along with Suit, are all together in heaven or wherever we go when we leave this place, is what keeps me from seeing any of it as a loss.

I had the fortune of knowing them, now I have the privilege of honoring them.

What I won’t ever have to do is remember them.

Because they were and will always be unforgettable.

Heed says Hello.

Today at Sabot School my 7th graders started a collaborative project for their Final between my class and their English Language Arts class based around the approach.

I used my song “Apart” (the clean version!) to show how it’s possible to illustrate a story with lyrics in ways that go beyond the literal, while filling the frame of context rather than just the blanks of expectation. To tell a story that is an experience, rather than just a series of events.

I had forgotten they didn’t know about Heed, my Dad being incarcerated, or what the truth of my life experiences has allowed me to accomplish.

It reminded me of the countless times I have chosen to use each brick life has thrown at me to strengthen my foundation, and build this life and lifestyle I lead one rhyme at a time. I’ve been through so many things no one ever prepared me for, and this art is the reason why I’ve done more than just survive.

I live, I write, I learn, I live.

As a teacher who uses as the core of my curriculum and methodology, my goal is to prepare my students for life by providing them an experience that goes beyond just making words rhyme, and is also fun.

As many educators will tell you, way too much time and effort is spent focusing on processed thoughts instead of working on the ways we process our thoughts. Often not by choice.

Even less time is spent on having fun.

Sabot is one of the few places I’ve taught at that gets what education is about. It’s a learning environment. They let teachers teach students how to teach themselves. As a result everyone learns, bonds are built, understanding is sought, and a certain sort of energy lingers long after classes end.

Today I needed it, and now I’m sharing it with you.

You need it too.

Otherwise, why would you be reading this?
