Gallery5 is a 501(c)3 Non-profit Organization that facilitates and inspires creativity while preserving and celebrating Richmond history. G5 is an award-winning, community-motivated visual and performing art center and museum

that has become a premier arts venue for local and regional audiences. Through extensive collaboration with cultural, educational, environmental and social organizations, we continue to broaden demographics by encouraging a more diverse, inclusive, and inspired region of art supporters. We showcase forward thinking contemporary art exhibitions in our historic space and museum that are designed to further innovation in our region and encourage dialogue among artists and audiences. Our exhibitions range from themed solo or group shows, international notables, local favorites and emerging unknowns whose works deserve more public exposure. Through the development of annual fundraisers, exhibitions and unique marketing campaigns, we utilize artistic talents to inspire positive social and economic change and awareness. Gallery5 is one of the top venues in the region for unconventional and progressive performance art series and is host to weekly visiting arts groups. These performances consist of local and nationally known artists in areas of improvisation comedy, spoken word, film, live music, contemporary dance and theater. With your support we continue to be a catalyst for new creative initiatives, and serve as a launching pad for emerging artists and area non-profits. We exist to preserve and make available our historic building as a museum and to provide our community with a space to share their innovations and to engage others. History:
Gallery5 is located in Richmond, Virginia’s, Historic Jackson Ward district. The Gallery opened its doors on April 15, 2005 as a museum, art, and performance space in an effort to save the life of a National Historic Landmark known as Steamer Company No. 5. Built in 1849, Steamer Company No. 5, is Virginia’s oldest firehouse and Richmond’s oldest police station and jailhouse. This landmark has survived threats of demolition by the City of Richmond for over 3 decades. Without the dedication of volunteers over the past 35 years, an important piece of our city’s history would have been lost. The downtown arts community has grown exponentially since Gallery5 became an anchor destination, attracting other museums, galleries and businesses to the area. Gallery5 is very proud of its contribution to the revitalization of the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood, and to the many artists and arts organizations that call the area home. Gallery5 is paving the way for positive community change through numerous campaigns, educational workshops, public arts collectives and grassroot collaborations. Gallery5 has received many notable recognitions and awards over the years. Some of our awards include:
- “Arts Innovator of the Year” 2008 Theresa Po***ck Award for Excellence in the Arts
-”Best Underground Venue for Music and Arts” Style Weekly’s 2011 Best of Richmond Awards

Gallery5 Community Care Night 🕯️
“Poe and The Evolution of Foster Care”
Presented by: Joshua S. Lewis, M.Div.
January 2, 2025 | 6:00-8:00pm

As part of Gallery5’s “Month of Poe”, we are excited to welcome UMFS’s Foster Family Outreach Specialist at Richmond Regional Center, Joshua S. Lewis, M.Div. Lewis will explore the complexities of “foster care” during Poe’s childhood and the evolution of care through the centuries to where it is today. Lewis will highlight the need that is still happening in the Richmond metro area for families to welcome children, like a young Edgar Poe.

UMFS is not just for kids. They are champions for children, teens, families and communities. Their guiding philosophy is to always do whatever it takes to help children and teens successfully overcome the toughest odds and create bright futures for them. They assist the child or teen by empowering the entire family to become stable, self-sufficient and caring members of their communities.

Joshua Lewis brings rich experience and heartfelt dedication to his role at UMFS. As a father of five and a former fictive-kin foster parent of teens, Joshua understands the impact of working with children and families. He believes that investing in people, places, and missions can create lasting positive change for generations.

With 26 years of experience driven by his faith, Joshua has consistently supported those on the margins, fostering hope, healing, and the power of love. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, writing, and being a devoted husband and dad.

🎟️: This event is free to attend, but pre-registration is encouraged. Pre-register online at gallery5arts.org.

Call for artists of all types both young and old for this community build project taking place at Gallery5 during the month of February. Sign up to participate now through January 25th. See info below for more details or learn more at:
https://gallery5arts.org/call-for-entries

In February 2025, Mending Walls RVA will host an exhibition inspired by a quote from the poem Mending Wall by Robert Frost, “Good fences make good neighbors.” Against the backdrop of political walls and social divides, we invite YOU to flip the script and help us build a new wall of voices, hopes, and ideas that challenge division and inspire conversations that can change everything.

What if a wall wasn’t about division but about connection and change?

How It Works:

Mending Walls will provide three-dimensional cardboard “bricks” to Richmonders from all walks of life to use as canvases. The bricks are meant to make you stop, think, and amplify your voice to encourage connections among us instead of separation in Richmond.

Think outside the box—your brick can:

-tell a story through painting, collage, or drawing
-be filled with meaningful content that is visible only to its future collector
-be reshaped, broken, or reimagined into a form that speaks to justice and connection.

Use your brick to help us collectively amplify diverse voices. Your contribution will be part of a thought-provoking installation—a wall reflecting the conversations we need to have about race, equity, and the world we want to build together.

Want to participate?
Request your free cardboard brick now at:
https://gallery5arts.square.site/mending-walls-artist-call

Let’s face physical, emotional, or ideological barriers and reconsider the boundaries in our lives to strengthen our community.

Submission deadline: Saturday, January 25th 2025
Once your inquiry has been received, you will receive an email detailing pick up dates for your brick from Gallery5 between now through the month of January.

All completed bricks must be returned to Gallery5 on/by Monday, February 3rd 2025 for the exhibition install.
Note: Artists have the option to make their bricks available for sale and can choose to either retain 60% of sale price or donate 100% of proceeds to Mending Walls, NFP & Gallery5, NFP.
