CATOOSA HAS BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS x 2
People smarter than me have long said that it is more difficult to defend a championshp that it is to win ouright. But it seems to me that a pair of wonderful Catroosa County softball program have laid that truism to rest.
This past weekend, the Ringgold Tigers (in Class AAA) and heritage Generals (in AAAA) added a 2020 GHSA state championship trophy to their 2019 haul. Likewise the Gordon Lee girls (in Class A Public) who own their division like the '27 Yankees (look it up!).

RINGGOLD REPEATS
The Lady Tigers (final record 27-11) had more comebacks than the McRib in taking down the rest of Class AAA. But more than anything, they were able to overcome their new region rival, Rockmart, when it counted.
Realignment meant that Calhoun was gone but Rockmart's formidable program arrived with a bang. The Yellowjackets (who ironically have the came nickname as Calhoun) won both regular season meetings, then won the region title by a 6-5 score.
Meeting in the state playoff semifinals, Rockmart won its fourth straight against the Tigers in eight innings, 7-6.
This meant that Ringgold not only would have to battle in the losers bracket, but defeat Rockmart twice in the finals. They earned the "if" game with a 9-2 victory over the Yellowjackets, but needed another eight-inning nailbiter, winning 7-6. But coach Daniel Hackett's Tigers trailed 6-0 in the third inning before turning it all around.
Baileigh Pitts jump-started the comeback with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third. They would add a fourth run in the inning on a Jade Gainer ground ball.
A Rockmart error in the fifth was costly as Addi Broome brought the run home with an RBI single. Jade Gainer tied the game in the sixth, but Ringgold stranded baserunners in every inning. The game-winner came in the eighth thanks to a pair a Rockmart errors and a perefect Jade Gainer bunt.
Taylor Layne earned the victory by working eight innings of relief after Rockmart jumped out in the first.

HERITAGE STEAMROLLS AAAA
Heritage entered the AAAA event as a favorite to earned its third straight state title thanks to a lineup that included six seniors and a 17-1 region record. But it almost failed to materialize as the Gens lost a 2-1 game in eight innings to Central Carrollton immediately after needing 10 innings to defeat West Laurens by an improbable 16-5 score.
Coach Tanner Moore's team was through with losing at that point, defeating West Laurens again before taking down Central Carrolton twice in a pair of games that were not for the faint of heart. They earned a winner-take-all game with a 3-2 win that saw the Generals fall behind 2-0 before rallying. Carmen Gaylor's two-run double in the second held up because Rachel Gibson slammed the door, striking out nine.
The finale belonged to Heritage by a 4-0 score as Gibson was able to following her nine-strikeout performance with a 10-strikeout shutout, allowing Central Carrolton only five hits with no walks. Sarah Haynes' RBI single in the fourth would prove to be enough, but a Savannah Wilson RBI hit and three Carrolltor errors gave Gibson three more runs to work with.
