Another big week for Team Chesapeake!

Austin Barbin made it comfortably through his first round of PGA Tour Qualifying with a 72-72-69 performance at Sand Ridge CC. Barbin moves onto Q-School’s next stage, which will be in October.

Former junior golf superstar and CBGC member Noah Wallace is off to a great start to his collegiate career, earning CACC Rookie Golfer of the Week honors for his solid T-3rd finish at The Griffin Invitational. Noah as a freshman is already playing in the #1 spot for Wilmington University.

And finally, huge congratulations to Rising Sun HS’s golf team on qualifying for the state championship! CBGC junior member Lucas Kilgore shot 2-under to co-medalist at the District VII championships, where he will be one of the favorites to win the Boys State Championship. CBGC junior member Caiden Jordan shot a great score 77 to help RSHS have room to spare to get below the team qualifying mark. Our other home team North East HS had two golfers qualify for states - both of which are CBGC junior members in Evan Smith and Wyatt Cudmore. Great job to our talented junior membership (all qualifiers from Cecil County are either members of Chesapeake Bay GC or play in a team that plays out of CBGC) on their standout performance and good luck to them and Rising Sun in the state championship!

Shout out to junior member Noah Wallace on an epic 11-under runner up performance at the 60th Williamson Cup! Noah lead Team Delaware in the longstanding junior invitational event where teams are hand selected with the best junior golfers in each participating region.

Congratulations to our 55th Annual Men’s & Ladies’ Club Champions!

Our Men’s Championship flight featured our deepest and most talented field in club history consisting of top ranked Philadelphia PGA professional Zach Barbin, Philadelphia and Maryland amateur champion Austin Barbin, Delaware Amateur champion Evan Barbin, Maryland Junior Amateur and high school state champion Noah Wallace, top 50 Philly section pro Andrew Barbin Jr, and accomplished amateur/professional golfers Brandon Wilson, Nick Manos, Lucas Kilgore, and Paul Russo. The average GHIN index of the flight was +4.2!

Zach Barbin outlasted the State Open caliber field from our hardest test of golf with a 65-70=135 (-9) finish to claim his third career club championship title. Zach’s steady, unrelenting attack was nearly matched by a late back 9 charge by our rising superstar Noah Wallace who turned in a 69-68=137 (-7) total to nearly become the first non-Barbin Club Champion since Alex Healy’s win in 2013. Zach’s first round 65 is the lowest tournament score posted from our new 7200 yard silver tees.

On the Ladies Championship side, we had a close contest after the first round with 12-time champ Arlene Zamora holding onto a small lead over Keven Lawson, Shelly Pinkerton, and Olivia Barbin but proved why she is the GOAT with a dominant second round 74 to claim her record 13th club championship title. Arlene has another epic year of hardware collecting as she won the Delaware Women’s Amateur in June.

Dona Wakeman would go on to win her first ever flighted club title with a super close bout with the rising Lai Li in the Ladies B Flight!

On the Men’s A Flight, we had another extremely talented field of eleven 2-6 handicappers playing from our 6800 yard black tees. Justin Eldreth would follow up his fantastic first round of 74 with a steady 78 to claim a 12 shot victory over Wyatt Cudmore (80-84) and 14 over Dave Psenicska (84-82) and Caiden Jordan (78-88). This is Justin’s first career title and a testament to how far his game has come along this year! Justin’s 152 from the black tees would have historically won several overall club championships in club history.

On the Men’s B Flight, we had 14 golfers between 8-13 handicaps duke it out in an epic battle. Reigning senior club champion, net champion, player of the year and member of the year Randy Burton took home his first flighted title with a 81-82 performance and a three shot victory over Penn State Harrisburg rising sophomore Johnny Waldridge’s 85-81. Bryan Shaffer would round out the podium with his 86-82 finish.

On the men’s C Flight, we had a major shakeup from the first round. When the dust settled, Ken Capolongo would follow up his first round of 90 with a gutsy second round performance of 86 to claim his first career championship title and three shots clear of several time flight champ Pete Petersen who also posted a second round 86. Matt Gabriel’s 90-90 would take third. Steve Jordan was our firt round leader with a score of 87.

On the men’s D Flight, Doug Phillips Sr would defend his title with a brilliant opening round of 86 - his lowest score of the year. Despite a rocky second round, it proved to be too much for Drew Wakeman and Gordy Kerr to overcome as Phillips would earn his second title by a 6 shot margin.

Congrats to all winners and thanks to the 52 competitors on making this our best field in club history!

🏆 Congrats to CBGC’s Zach Barbin on winning the 2024 National Car Rental Philadelphia Assistant PGA Professional Championship today at White Manor C.C.! Zach made a 35 foot birdie on the 36th hole to finish at 8-under par for the victory.
