First Things First
Ne live in an increasingly divided worlc
There's a line that's been drawn in the sand
It seems like half of us are on one side, and
half of us are on the other side. Except now
that line has become more like a canyor
And the canyon keeps getting wider
pecause every year we become more
divided. It's to the point where finding
common ground seems almost impossible.
And this breaks the heart of God. So, how
should we respond to this division as
disciples of Jesus?
First, we have to always remember to keep
the main thing the main thing. What is the
main thing? The Good News of Jesus. The
Gospel. So, what is the Gospel and how
does it affect how we think about the
things which divide us,including even
politics?
The Gospel is the Good News that througl
the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus,
God has become King-and His Kingdom is
coming on Earth as it is in Heaven. Why is
this Good News? Because our God is a
much different and much better King than
the rulers and leaders of our world. And
pecause everyone is invited to be a part of
His Kingdom
You're invited. They're invited. Even the
people who support that person you don't
like.
And when we choose to believe the Good
News of Jesus and pledge our allegiance
to our heavenly King, it changes
everything. The Gospel is not just a "get out
of jail free" card. The Gospel is an invitation
to be rescued from sin and restore
creation.
Because Jesus has been Good News for
us, we are called to become Good News for
others.
Even in political conversations. Even with
people we disagree with. Even with people
we don't particularly like.
When we remember to keep the main thing
the main thing, it changes how we do
everything. When we both believe and
ecome Good News, we can't help but be
different.
Why? Because we know that no matter who
sits in government leadership, our God is
still King.
Pray: God, help me to keep the main thing
the main thing. Remind me how good You
are. Help me to follow the example of Jesus
and become Good News for others in the
same way that He has been Good News for
me. Amen

God, You are with me in hard times, and protect me at all times. My future is secure in You because I am Your child. So today, I give my life and my year over to You. Teach me to seek You first this year so that way I can embrace the abundant life that You offer me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What It Takes to Thrive

In both gardening and spiritual terms, planting and harvesting are exciting seasons. Planting is the start of an adventure, and harvesting is the product of hard work. It’s easy to celebrate new beginnings and hard-earned completions—but one thing that’s not as much fun?

The pruning process.

Who wants to acknowledge what’s dead and unproductive in their lives? Who wants to trim back what’s already blooming—leaving you smaller, awkward, and feeling extra weak?

But pruning is exactly what we need to keep producing fruit.

“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”
John 15:2 NIV

Jesus mentions two separate actions in this process—cutting off what’s dead and pruning fruit.

Cutting out what’s dead makes sense. It’s extra weight, it’s unproductive, it’s blocking sunlight, and it’s stealing good energy from branches that could thrive. But without proper context, pruning fruit feels backwards.

However, the purpose of pruning isn’t to disable something, but to revitalize it.

If a branch is weak or diseased, it could not only damage itself, but the surrounding trees as well. Without pruning, both the tree and the life surrounding it can never reach full potential.

Pruning creates room for more growth.
Pruning stimulates production.
Pruning keeps the plant or person strong.

God is a good Gardener. He wouldn’t be a good Gardener if He left you to yourself—overgrown, ineffective, and full of dysfunction. But He cares for those He loves. He cuts off what’s dead for your benefit. He lovingly trims back ineffective things in your life to make way for more fruit.

You can trust God with your life because He cares about who you are and who you can become.

So what “dead branches” are you dragging around? Is it possible that God is pruning you for future growth? Take a few moments and talk to God about any areas in your life that you recognize need to change.

The Giver of Good Things

James 1:17 has a lot to tell us about God. First off, James tells us that God is the one who gives good and perfect gifts. This is because God is the creator of the universe. He is the one who formed everything and everyone. Everything starts with God, so all good gifts and blessings in life come from God.

In addition to that, it is God who gives us salvation, which is the greatest gift. He freely offers us eternal life by believing in Jesus as the One who saves us. God not only gives perfect gifts, but He also is the perfect Gift.

The next thing we learn about God in this verse, is that God reigns from heaven, but has also come down from heaven to us. God rules and reigns from His throne in Heaven, as Psalm 103:19 says. But we also see in John 6:38 that Jesus came down from Heaven and took on flesh. He is the perfect gift that has come down from heaven.

Lastly, we learn from this verse that God is unchanging. Humans are constantly changing. We are continually growing, learning, and forming new opinions. God is not like that. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and His character never changes.

The God who loves us and gives us grace today will do the same tomorrow. He is good, all the time.

So take some time today to thank God for who He is and what He has done for you. Thank Him for the gifts and blessings He has given you.

Thank Him for the gift of salvation.

God, I believe that every good and perfect thing is from You. Thank You for not only wanting good things for me but also for loving me. I’m grateful for every blessing You’ve placed in my life, and I choose to focus my mind on these things. I love You, Lord.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
