If you’re heading down to the creek this weekend, you might come across a Queen Snake (Regina septemvittata). They spend much of their time under rocks and logs in shallow, slow moving streams, but you might also spot one in low branches over the water during the daytime. Queen Snakes are highly aquatic and feed on the newly molted, soft shelled crayfish in creeks and rivers.

Unfortunately, Queen Snakes have diminished in abundance in some areas of the Piedmont due to soil erosion and the influx of silt covering the rocky habitats used by both this snake and its prey. Conserving stream habitats from channelization and protecting their water quality are key factors in the conservation of Queen Snakes across the eastern United States.

It’s that time of year again, when Pink Lady’s Slipper or Moccasin Flower (Cypripedium acaule) are in bloom! This orchid is native to eastern North America and it’s often found in sunny coniferous or oak forests with acidic soils. In our region, you can often find them blooming from around mid-April through May. You can find Pink Lady’s Slipper in the Piedmont, but it’s more common in the Blue Ridge of the Carolinas and Georgia. It becomes more common in the Piedmont of Virginia and further north. It’s also in the Great Lakes states.

The “slipper” or “moccasin” of Pink Lady’s Slipper refers to its pouched floral shape. A vertical slit on the front of the slipper allows bumblebees to enter. They’re attracted to the color and scent, but will find no nectar reward inside. So tricky!

Once trapped inside the slipper, the bumblebee is guided by floral hairs toward an exit hole at the bottom of the slipper. Before it exits, though, the bumblebee first brushes against the sticky female stigma, which picks up pollen on the bumblebee’s body from other Pink Lady’s Slippers it had previously visited. Closer to the exit hole, the bumblebee brushes against the pollen-bearing male anthers on its way out of the slipper. A pollen delivery and then a pick-up on its way out the door, how’s that for a cool pollen courier service!

Pink Lady’s Slippers should never be picked or transplanted from the wild. They have an extremely low transplant success due to their association with mycorrhizal fungi in the soil. I particularly like how these two Pink Lady’s Slippers appear to be “holding hands.”

CLIENT – How much will it cost to do this job?
CONTRACTOR - $2,800-$3500 dollars.

CLIENT: That’s too expensive for this job.

CONTRACTOR: How much do you think it should cost?

CLIENT: $800 max! It’s a simple job!
CONTRACTOR: I can’t do the job for so little.

CLIENT: People in your line of work wants to make too much of a huge profit! Don't you do sports and coach kids as well and social media stuff cut me a deal?

CONTRACTOR: I’m sorry you feel this way. Why don’t you do the job?

CLIENT: But, I don’t know how to do any of that.

CONTRACTOR: For $900, I can teach you everything you need to know to do the job. You can then use $800 to do the job, and you’re still saving $1,100. Also, you will obtain all the knowledge and the experience for the next time you need to do this job better than YouTube university.

CLIENT: Deal!

CONTRACTOR: Great! To start, you need to buy tools. You will need a chipping hammer, a nail gun, a laser, a drill, a mixer machine, PPE, and some other things.

CLIENT: But, I don’t have any of those tools and I can’t buy all that for just one job!

CONTRACTOR: Ok. I can rent you my tools for another $300. You’re still saving $800.

CLIENT: That’s cutting my savings, but I will rent your tools.

CONTRACTOR: Perfect! I’ll be back Saturday and we can start.

CLIENT: Wait! I can’t Saturday. I only have time today.

CONTRACTOR: I’m sorry, I only teach others on Saturdays. I have to prioritize my time and my tools needs to be in other jobs I have during the week.

CLIENT: Ok then. I will sacrifice my family’s plans on Saturday.

CONTRACTOR: Right, me too! I normally coach kids on weekends and work on my fix and flip homes and Oh, I forgot. If you’re going to do the job yourself, you need to buy the materials. There’s a high demand nowadays, so your best bet is to get a truck and be at the hardware store by 6am before other contractors get there.

CLIENT: AT SIX IN THE MORNING? On Saturday? That’s too early for me. I don’t even have a truck!

CONTRACTOR: I guess you’ll have to rent one. By the way, do you have some helpers to help you load the truck?

CLIENT: You know what? I’ve been thinking. Probably is better for you to do the job. It’s better to pay you to do the job right and not having to go through all that hassle.

CONTRACTOR: Good thinking. Sign here and let me get to work and it's 20% down rest upon completion!

This is the truth.

People are not just paying for a job, they are paying for knowledge, experience, tools, time, family sacrifices, and other things you bring to the table.

Don’t let others dictate your worth. She does not know the concrete was free a buddy owed me for coaching his son up in football. So minus rebar and wood I had at home already this was almost full profit minus $150 paid out per person the two workers for 6 hours of work. 😎 If your gonna do cheap jobs make sure it's almost 100% profit period.

Boil, strain, then add water and vinegar to bring out the colors. Less water deeper color, more water softer colors. Place eggs into the mixture and wait for the magic to happen.

Typically, we ring in summer with open doors to let in friends and open windows to catch a breeze. But bugs think the invitation is open to them, too. Luckily, these plants help keep them out.
