Crime Junkie and Ranunculus babies! Making ranunculus do a little dance before they go in! I ordered...so many ranunculus this year and then was too tired to plant them out this past fall. So now, I'm doing my least favorite thing in the entire world and pre-sprouting. Oh, and then I'm going to have to figure out how to thaw my frozen solid beds for these to go into once they do sprout. Good times were had by all! 💐 But, for real, I'm not a pre-sprout girlie. The more times I have touch the product, the more expensive and time consuming that product becomes. Just hoping to do a little better next year with our shiny, new high tunnel. Our Spring subscribers got quite the treat last week! A bunch of peonies! The star of Spring/early Summer, without doubt! I planted 210 peony plants last fall and we had a nice, small haul this year - although, some are still blooming, so excited to see what happens this week. I'm ALREADY excited for next Spring! They're coming! Peony season! Everyone's favorite Spring flower! Their form, their scent, they're literally so perfect! Our first year peonies are churning out buds daily. Some of the other first years are a little small, so they'll just hang out and absorb sunshine and rain in the field. Thankfully, my personal collection of peonies is also impressive. I am SO hopeful that a bunch of these will be headed out this upcoming week! This growing season has been so strange. It's been so hot and everything feels like it's weeks ahead and yet, for us, weeks behind, too! What a paradox! Even my roses are weeks ahead. Can you believe this pretty "Jowey Nicky" came from a cutting early LAST Spring?! It was my first time growing dahlias, let alone taking cuttings! Imagine my surprise when those little cuttings gave me these beauties (and all the tubers that came with them!)! 🌸 As we look to Spring, I'll start waking up some of my tubers to begin the cutting process again. This is SUCH a great way to multiply tuber stock, especially for those harder to find varieties. Kelgai Ann, I'm looking at you! Genetically, a cutting is an exact replica of the dahlia tuber in which it was cut. How cool, right!? 🌸 We have a few more tuber sales that we're looking to score big at, and then we'll let you in on what to expect from us this summer dahlia-wise. We haven't released summer/dahlia subscriptions yet, but you're going to want to get in on that magic when we do! To start, we've added well over 150(!!!) highly sought after dahlia varieties to our little portfolio. Oh, the ✨dahlia wars✨ Did you get in on the @rivermerlefarm dahlia sale yesterday!? I hope so! It was SUCH a fun sale! I missed out on a few highly sought after RM varieties, but hoping to get some cuttings in the Spring. Since then, I've seen ALL SORTS of feedback, so I thought I'd write a little note on why you don't need to panic if you DIDN'T get your variety and on COST! ✨ Wanted something you didn't get? Don't fret! I was so worked up over missing a Bloomquist Blush and Ruby two weeks ago that I thought I *might* explode. In full blown panic, I placed a post on Facebook, within MINUTES, a fellow dahlia lover reached out and offered me a tuber of each! Of course, I will pay her for her hard work in growing and getting additional tubers. ✨ The same thing happened to me yesterday. I was desperately trying to secure a RM Summer Haze (the yellow, purple, pink, creaminess was everything my little heart could manage). I got stuck in the queue. With a brand new release, your only option is a *cutting* (I'll post on that later). So I kept an eye on instagram and Facebook. I reached out AGAIN and AGAIN, dahlia lovers WANT TO SHARE. We WANT you to have these beauties in your garden, too!! Thankfully, I have a fast friend in the #yoop, @katienierebrown, and she scored some BEAUTIES. She is after a much sought after 'Kelgai Ann.' I have...several. I will give her a tuber and she'll do some cutting magic. Everyone wins! I also got to meet and know @rhodesgatefarm! She scored big yesterday, too! She lost her dahlias last year and is rebuilding. She has something I would love and hopefully, I have something she would love. Everyone wins! Plus, new friend! ✨COST. RM varieties were more expensive, BUT in order to have a genetically "clean" dahlia from a seed, it takes THREE YEARS. Three entire years to ensure your baby seedling performs well.
