A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the Sun, as seen from Earth. Totality during such an eclipse can only be seen from a limited area, shaped like a narrow belt, usually about 160 km (100 mi) wide and 16,000 km (10,000 mi) long. Areas outside this track may be able to see a partial eclipse of the Sun.

Looking at a solar eclipse without any protective eyewear can severely harm your eyes. The only way to safely watch a solar eclipse is to wear protective eclipse glasses or project an image of the eclipsed Sun using a DIY Pinhole Projector.

The Rochester area is preparing for a massive number of visitors, traveling here to get a better view of the 2024 total solar eclipse.

"On April 8, 2024, the greater Rochester region will get to experience a total solar eclipse for the first time since 1925," said Debra Ross, who chairs Rochester's task force for the eclipse. "We’re expecting hundreds and thousands of visitors to this region on this day. There won’t be another one in the continental US, another major one, for 21 years, and not another one coming through Rochester, for another 120 years."

A Chinese state-run news outlet shared a political cartoon on Sunday, mocking the United States by invoking the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Monday marks the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, in which two commercial airplanes were flown into New York City's World Trade Center buildings, bringing the structures down and killing thousands of people. The traumatic event has become a defining tragedy in the course of American history and is marked with remembrance events and memorials each year.

The anniversary is also frequently used as a jumping-off point for adversarial entities to make critical remarks towards the U.S. On Sunday, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev marked the occasion with a social media post predicting that the U.S. will eventually face a 9/11-level attack with nuclear weapons.

If you’re up for an adventurous day trip with walking and climbing and exploring ancient rock formations, check out Panama Rocks Scenic Park in Panama, NY, near Jamestown, about a 2.5 hour drive from Rochester. Opening day for the season is tomorrow Saturday, May 6th!

The main trail is a one-mile loop around a half-mile ridge of rock formations.

There is also axe throwing 🪓 for ages 12+ (make a reservation on their website).

From Saturday, May 6th to Friday, May 12th Panama Rocks is celebrating Teacher and Nurse Appreciation Week! Teachers, School Staff, and Nurses can get FREE admission to Panama Rocks just by showing their ACTIVE school/nurse ID!
