Explore every season in the Heart of the Arboretum District: majestic colors of fall, blooming crabapples in spring, butterfly gardens in summer, and snow-covered evergreens in winter. Our property began as a tree nursery when Landscape Architect, William Lincoln Taylor opened the Rockford Nursery in the early 1920’s. Many of the rare trees in our arboretum are a result of his experimental plantin
gs. Taylor continued running the Rockford Nursery with the help of his family until 1968 when he sold the business to Carl and Roy Klehm. The Klehm family owned the business until Carl Klehm passed away in the early 1980’s. Carl’s family had been inspired by a visit to Severson Dells and decided to donate the land to the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District (WCFPD) in 1985 on the condition that it become an arboretum. With the help of volunteers and organizations, originally operating as Northern Illinois Botanical Society, Klehm Arboretum grew into the special place it is today. Visitors can still see evidence of the property’s history especially on the West Loop where visitors often stop to marvel at a row of large European Larch. Klehm continues to operate in partnership with the WCFPD. The 1990’s saw the addition of the paved paths comprising the East and West Loop, many gardens like the Nancy Olson Children’s Garden and our Visitors Center and the Clarcor Pavilion. With almost three decades to grow, our property has become an essential part of the community and a popular tourist destination. Many people don’t realize we are conveniently located only a few minutes south of downtown Rockford and north of U.S. Our grounds include 155 acres of gardens and woodland paths. It’s important to us that everyone can enjoy a connection to nature on our property. We ensure that our grounds are accessible by being ADA compliant and make a point of telling visitors that we are very dog friendly and encourage owners to bring their pets for a walk. With two miles of paved paths and two and half miles of unpaved trails, we’re a great place for healthy fun. To maintain a living museum for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of all people. Education is important to us. As a place to learn, Klehm offers a variety of educational opportunities for people of all ages from nature-themed Family Fun Days to Botanical Lectures, group tours for schools and adults as well as a full schedule of activities and programs based around gardening and creatively engaging with the natural world, throughout the year. As an arboretum, Klehm is Rockford’s living museum with over 300 species of trees and shrubs and an additional 200 cultivars enhancing diversity of the many collections. As a botanical garden, Klehm is home to many specialty gardens, like the daylily garden, butterfly, fountain, rhododendron, wildflower and hosta garden, styled in formal or casual elegance. Additionally, we choose to support our local food pantries with a Plant-a-Row garden. Mission Statement: To maintain a living museum for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of all people.

Did you know it's National Squirrel Appreciation Day? Some may see these critters as a nuisance, while others may find them fascinating. Either way, they are quite entertaining and they are a part of our natural world whether we like it or not! They are so important as they are our seed and spore dispersers - we really appreciate that at Klehm! So, stop and take a minute to watch a squirrel or feed one and laugh at their silly ways 💕

Our organization is proud to announce Rooted in Rockford: Art and Tree Science at Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden, a seasonal outdoor exhibit for 2025-2026 that blends tree science with artistic interpretation of the concept of “roots” both literally and figuratively, and will rely on Illinois-based artists for the submission of sculptures or other artworks to comprise the exhibit itself.
On these cold, cold days, our greenhouse is keeping some of our potted plants warm and toasty until spring comes. It's fun to walk by and see the green!

It's going to be a beautiful day! Come on out for a walk...we open at 9AM!

Come, walk slowly and gently through the winter woods. Absorb the silence and peace of a night illuminated by a full moon. Stand and be warmed at a fire that reminds us of the warmth of spring that is soon to come. And let your spirit rise with the heat to dance with all of the life in which we are immersed.
This little guy loves being an honorary member here at Klehm 😊 We are open year round and the perfect, quiet place for a walk! We have several options to choose from for your specific family set up and we love when members bring their leashed dogs (that is the only downside for our squirrel residents 😆) 🐾 There are other perks towards our events throughout the year, a discount in the gift shop and free or discounted admission to other gardens throughout the US!
Also, we keep our paths plowed and salted all winter for the safety of our visitors!
Klehm has another Snowshoe Hike planned on February 9th with Rocktown Adventures! They've added a special twist for 2025, so check out the link below for details and to register!
We had a great turnout for our First Moon Tranquility Walk last night! One of the participants also got a great shot of the first moon...thank you to everyone who came and took part!
Happy Sunday! It may be January, but we are already thinking towards spring...our grounds staff have been cutting, clearing and arranging to prepare for simple touches to enhance your visit, including a new little seating area right off the path near the Children's Garden ❤

It was a cold week, but there were some pockets of sunshine that made it tolerable for a quick jaunt! Here are some shots from this week out on the path...there's always something to see!

We recently found an old poster hiding away and decided to hang it in our Visitor's Center. It needs to be seen!
Carl Klehm, a professional horticulturalist and fourth generation nurseryman, purchased the Rockford Nursery in 1968 because of his interest in its experimental planting and more than 100 native species, including a rare stand of pre-Revolutionary War burr oak trees. Later, in 1985, when a projected extension of Harrison Road threatened the Nursery, Klehm donated the entire tract of land to the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District as a means of preserving it for future generations.

THIS SUNDAY, January 12! There are still a few spots left!
Walk slowly through the forest in in the deep quiet of a winter night, guided by the
first moon of the new year. Let the spirit that dwells there envelop you and bring
you peace and comfort. Then, leave with a different perspective than when you
arrived.
We are excited to share news that Klehm has received two new bat houses from Nicor Gas! These two high-quality shelters were crafted and assembled by Nicor Gas employees this past fall as a way to help take action on their company's pledge to promote and support environmental stewardship.
We have had several bat houses on the property in the past decade, but these structures do not last forever and we had currently been without any. Our thanks goes out to Nicor Gas for helping improve wildlife habitat at Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden!
There are 13 different species of bats that call Illinois home, and the most common include Big brown bats, little brown bats, Northern long-eared myotis, Eastern red bats, and tri-colored bats. The little brown bat is currently under review for listing as an endangered species under the US Endangered Species Act.

Since posting about all of the birds spotted here at the Christmas Bird Count, we thought we'd feature one that makes it's home at Klehm year-round...the stunning Cedar Waxwing.
The Cedar Waxwing is one of the few North American birds that specializes in eating fruit. It can survive on fruit alone for several months. Because they eat so much fruit, Cedar Waxwings occasionally become intoxicated or even die when they run across overripe berries that have started to ferment and produce alcohol.
Waxwings are truly gorgeous birds that almost look unreal! They are often heard before they’re seen, so learn their high-pitched call notes. Look for them low in berry bushes, high in evergreens, or along rivers and over ponds. Be sure to check big flocks of small birds: waxwings are similar to starlings in size and shape, and often form big unruly flocks that grow, shrink, divide, and rejoin like starling flocks.
Did you know Klehm is a haven for birds? During the local Christmas Bird Count on December 28th, 32 species of our feathered friends were accounted for! Some of which included: Barred Owl, Yellow bellied Sapsucker, Common Goldeneye, Hermit Thrush, Ring billed Gull, Tufted Titmouse, Winter Wren and Yellow Rumped Warbler.
Next time you're out, bring a pair of binoculars and you just might catch a glimpse of one of these beautiful birds. With no leaves on the trees, it's a good time to keep looking up!
