Our JUBILEE SERIES celebrates the experience of movie-watching in theaters, with a series of films that have anniversaries in 2024! For a hundred years, film fanatics, cinefiles and general movie-goers alike have come in droves to see motion pictures on the sliver screen – settling down into comfy seats in the darkened auditorium of their favorite movie palace, with their popcorn and Mike-n-Ike’s, to be transported to lands of wonder and moments of great fervor. In recent years, the convenience of streaming at home has shifted the way that we view films, but deep down we still hold onto the feeling we got sitting in the theater.

2024 boasts a plethora of major anniversaries for films that many hold near and dear to their hearts. Over the next several months, the Strand will be offering you the chance to see your nostalgic favorites in the way you did when you first fell in love with them – in a classic theater! We’ll be showing top pick films that are celebrating their 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th anniversaries and beyond, from Indiana Jones to The Wizard of Oz. We hope to see you there!

9/05 - Thu - 7:00pm

A sweeping family adventure, My Penguin Friend is a triumphant tale of friendship between a lonely father and a little lost penguin who recharges his spirit and heals his family with an unshakable, ocean-crossing loyalty. Humble fisherman João (International star Jean Reno) has turned away from the world in the wake of tragedy. But when he discovers a penguin drifting alone in the ocean, drenched in oil from a spill, his first instinct is to help. To his wife’s (Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza) dismay, he not only rescues the sea creature, but takes the flightless bird under his wing. For the first time in years João starts to feel joy, even if he cannot fathom just how unbreakable a bond is being formed.
When the penguin suddenly disappears back into the immense wilds of the ocean, João believes it is impossible that he will ever see his friend again. But thousands of miles away, the penguin is caught in misadventures of his own, determined to use his unique GPS-like powers to find his way back to the place he now considers home. Based on an emotional true story that riveted the world and filmed on the spectacular coasts of Brazil and Argentina, My Penguin Friend is a tale that traverses the magic of the ocean, the beauty of nature, and the transformative power of love.

GENTLEMAN BRAWLERS - On Sale Now!
September 21
Sponsored by: First National Bank and First National Wealth Management
Tickets: https://bit.ly/4b6Rqsb or at RocklandStrand.com

When Brooklyn collective GENTLEMAN BRAWLERS performs, it’s more than a concert: It’s an electrifying experience. Led by creative duo Becca Fox and Matt Walsh, the band channels musical inspo Talking Heads with their distinct brand of Afrofunk and indie dance music. “If you can MOVE you can DANCE!” shouts an exuberant Fox from the stage — or from the dance floor, where she’s joined the crowd. Gentleman Brawlers loves to engage an audience, and the audience loves them right back. The BBC’s Tom Robinson hailed them as “a virtuoso live band, grooving together like a beautifully engineered machine.”
GB has two distinct incarnations – live and in studio – that elevate and inform each other. Through a sonic blend of disco-based horn lines, sticky highlife guitar, and polyrhythms from West Africa, Trinidad, and Brazil, GB’s live shows ignite a community-based, improvisational energy; in studio, the band will often reimagine their songs through an EDM lens. Whether the audience is on the dance floor or pressing play, Gentleman Brawlers always delivers an exhilarating, celebratory experience.

Acclaimed by NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest & WNYC’s The Greene Space, GENTLEMAN BRAWLERS has opened for Cimafunk and Grammy award-winning artists Los Amigos Invisibles & Fantastic Negrito at Brooklyn Bowl, Live at the Archway Festival in Dumbo, and performed at Pier 1 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side for Summer on the Hudson.

“Gentleman Brawlers brings a level of theatricality to their music that takes their performances up to the next level. It is refreshing and inspiring to have artists not just make great music, as if that’s not enough on its own, but to bring so much creativity to the stage. A talented group of musicians, putting in the extra time to do something special. We could all use more of this.”

THE CRITERION COLLECTION was established in 1984, with a mission to preserve important classic and independent films from around the world, making them available to watch in analog and digital formats – with DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K Ultra HD and the Criterion Channel streaming service. In 2017, Criterion launched a series of original programming for the Criterion Channel called Art-House America, to showcase independently run arthouse theaters around the U.S and highlight the people and community that keep them alive. This series was turned into a fundraising campaign in the wake of the COVID pandemic in 2020, raising much-needed funds to provide financial relief to small arthouse theaters.

Now, with their support of the Strand Theatre in Rockland, Criterion is furthering their support of community movie theaters, by sponsoring a year-long series of films that will allow the Strand to screen a wide range of acclaimed, hard-to-see movies for the local audience, and turn these screenings into a fundraising event for the much beloved 100 year old theater.
