Did you know that many outages are caused by trees? Did you also know that we budget a significant amount of money to help prevent these types of outages? This month our safety coordinator wants to get the word out about an important topic: trimming trees.

Our goal is to safely deliver electricity to our membership and to minimize the amount of outages that occur. This is why you will occasionally see our crews trimming trees around our equipment. Our crews are not landscapers, their job is to keep our equipment and by extension, our membership, safe. Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to provide electricity to our community.

With the cold weather settling in, our Safety Coordinator wanted to share some safety tips about space heaters with you, our members. These tips may be small, but they can make a big difference!

Heating equipment, such as space heaters, kerosene heaters, fireplaces and wood-burning stoves, is a leading cause of fires in U.S. homes, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Follow these safety tips to use space heaters safely:

- Read all instructions and use space heaters only as recommended.
- Do not leave space heaters unattended.
- Plug them directly into an outlet; most power strips and extension cords are not equipped to handle the energy spikes caused by space heaters cycling on and off.
- Unplug any other items from the outlet you are using and try to use a dedicated circuit to avoid overload.
- Keep children and pets away from space heaters.
- Turn the heaters off before you leave the room or go to sleep.
- Do not use heaters that are in disrepair or have frayed cords or damaged plugs.
- Place them on flat, level surfaces and never on furniture, counters or carpet, which can overheat.
- Unplug and put space heaters away (out of the reach of children) when not in use.

Do you own a generator? If so, please read the following safety statement:

Backfeeding occurs when you plug in a generator to an appliance outlet (such as your dryer or range) using a male-to-male extension cord (sometimes called su***de cords). While this might be a tempting solution during a power outage, do not do it.

This kind of connection not only poses a hazard to you and your home, but could potentially travel from your home back to the transformer and onto the line that one of our linemen could be fixing.

Instead of using a male-to-male extension cord, consider having a transfer switch professional installed. Making sure your extension cords are properly rated for the correct wattage and use. A little safety goes a long way!
