Count down to Spring and what a wonderful way to chase winter away!!! Join us all March 1st. View full post and the Forge Appalachia page for all the details on this event. We can't wait to see everyone again!
Folks, we're pumped that you're getting excited about First Annual Fasnacht! We've been receiving questions about this event and what to expect so here's a rundown of the origins and festivities for our take on this celebration.
Fastnacht day is the PA Dutch or German tradition associated with Fat Tuesday. It occurs on Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday. (Fast night) Because many choose to fast or deny themselves sweets and treats during Lent, it was common to indulge on Fat Tuesday. Fat/Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent. To prepare for Lent, many religions emptied their pantries of indulgences like lard and sugar. In using up the supplies, the Fastnacht was born.
Our event will take place on Saturday, March 1st from 5pm-9pm at the Jackson-Umberger Homestead site. You can expect delicious, themed foods from Slim Piggins Food Cart, and scrumptious sweets and treats from Frog Leap Farm.
We'll have traditional barn dancing from 6-8pm with music by Gina and Jason Dilg of The Lovely Mountaineers and their friend and musician, Ipi Hello. The esteeemed Anne Lough will be calling the dances. During the dancing, we'll judge handmade masks and declare a winner. After all the hootin', hollerin' and dancin', we'll line up together for our candlelit parade around the grounds. The event will conclude as we chase the colder days away by burning a life-sized Old Man Winter!
During all of this, you'll be able to visit our tavern for drinks from Seven Sisters Brewery and play old time games, too!
If you didn't snag a seat for our FULL Mask Making Basics workshop this weekend, we'll be posting resources soon to help you create a mask of your own. They're easier than you think and you only need a few hours to complete.
