Happy Belated 80th Birthday to the one and only Archie Lee Bell of Houston’s own Archie Bell & The Drells! This group is synonymous with my entrance into soul music, record collecting, and going to soul clubs, and it all started with that infamous baseline. Bell’s voice and vocal delivery was always tough and in perfect contrast to the sultry backing vocals and smooth grooves of the rhythm section.
Their iconic tune “Tighten Up” along the rest of that similarly titled first album will forever be etched into my mind and no matter how many times it’s played it never gets played out. With other tunes like “There’s Gonna Be A Showdown” and “I Can’t Stop Dancing” this group had a way about them that few others could recreate. We play a lot of songs but I think we’ll definitely be playing one of these tomorrow night for the Capital City Soul Club One Year Anniversary with Special Guest DJ Matt Stout

This tune has been on regular rotation for me since grabbing it off our very own David Nicholson during our first mix making session. The intro, the drums, the amazing backing vocals, all paired with Jackie Lee’s one of a kind vocal delivery, make this a low key favourite of mine.

Happy Belated to the one and only Chuck Barksdale, original bass singer and founding member of of The Dells. His vocal stylings informed and taught bass singers for generations to come and his passing in 2019 sent reverberations through the industry.
The Dells remain a fixture of soul music with them even being inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Known for their earlier work in most circles their output on Cadet & Chess Records in the back half of the 60s remains some of their most incredible work.
Songs like Stay In My Corner, There Is, Wear It On Your Face & Thinkin’ About You stick out as some of my personal favourites from that era and tunes that will forever live on and continue the legacy of The Dells. Happy Belated Mr. Barksdale and thanks for the music!

Happy 78th Birthday to the one and only Betty Barton AKA Bettye Swann born in Louisiana on this day in 1944. Most well known for her iconic hit song “Make Me Yours” released on Money Records in 1967, her incredible lyrical prowess and soul crushing vocal delivery is up there with some of the best from this era in my humble opinion.
She had a slew of tunes on Money Records at this time that are all worth noting including “Don’t Take My Mind” as well as “The Heartache Is Gone” both of which are favourites of mine.
Barton later signed with Captial and eventually landed at Atlantic with a very brief yet notable one single stop at Fame Records with “I’m Just Living A Lie / I Can’t Let You Break My Heart”. Happy Birthday Betty and thank you so much for the music! 💵💵💵

Happy Birthday to the one and only Yusuf Hazziez AKA Joseph Arrington Jr. AKA Joe Tex born August 8th! This clip of him playing his tune “Show Me” comes from The Joe Tex Show which was recorded live in Stockholm Sweden in 1969. If you’re familiar with this tune you’ll notice it’s quite a bit faster than the original. If you happen to make it out to The Starlet Room above Harlow's on Friday night for the first edition of Capital City Soul Club you may just hear this one just not at this tempo. 😅 HBD and Rest In Power Joe and thanks for all the music. 💪💪💪

This performance was shot on 35mm before a live studio audience in Los Angeles, California on November 29, 1965.
