The Lords of the New Church with Stiv Bators on vocals was one of my favorite Club Can’t Tell shows. They brought primal New York City punk to Sacramento. The audience probably experienced what it was like at CBGB-OMFUG or Max’ Kansas City. The show felt very Bowery and Stiv wore the pointiest stiletto heels I ever saw. (photo: Greg Savalin)

I’ll stop inundating you with calendars from Club Can’t Tell — but here’s one more. Maybe you remember some of these groups. Unforgettable was the Beat Farmers with wild Country Dick Montana. And with the recent death of beloved Mojo Nixon, here’s proof that they were here!

Somebody posted a two-week calendar from Club Can’t Tell — in response to the documentary. I have to say this was pretty typical of the acts we presented regularly. As the ad says, “There’s always something going on at Club Can’t Tell — everything from national acts, to varied musical genres, to local nights and dancing. 🕺🎶🎤 #

I went downtown this morning to meet with filmmaker Kirk McCaleb who is making a documentary on the Sacramento music scene of the 80s. We met at the site of my Club Can’t Tell and told stories and reminisced a bit. It was great to meet up with producer Johnny Pride (formerly of the Features) and our old sidekick Dave “Ratty” Perry! 🎶

TB by Kevin Seconds in 2013 talking about the China Wagon days:

The D.O.A./Black Flag/Reagan Kids China Wagon show was the first punk show in Sacramento I ever saw. It was in September of 1980 and i lived in Reno at the time. D.O.A. had just played Reno and had invited a bunch of us to make the drive down for the show. Around 10 of us did and it was quite a doozy.

Back then, Sac had a lot of new wavers (lotsa gangly nerdy kids in long overcoats and skinny ties who liked the B-52s and Blondie) and only a small hardcore scene. It was at this show that i got to know cool Sac punk folks like Karen Spencer, Rat's Ass and Johnny No-Style and they welcomed us Skeenos by thrashing and skanking with us on the dancefloor.

The Reagan Kids were great.

D.O.A. were their usual brilliant selves. This was the classic Sh*thead/Rampage/Biscuits/Gregg-era and no band could touch D.O.A., live-wise, at the time.

Black Flag destroyed my brain that night.

The show ended in a mini-riot when our then singer Dim Menace, who had been drinking all day long, got into it with some metal dude and his girlfriend at the front door. The fight carried on outside, the cops came and by the time we hustled Dim back into the car to go home, I believe he had fought 5 or 6 different people.

This morning, the internet is awash with the news of the passing of Seymour Stein, founder of Sire records. You might not recognize his name, but you know and admire the acts he discovered and signed. In fact, these acts and their songs formed the soundtrack of our lives in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

Stein introduced UK acts like The Smiths, Fleetwood Mac, Depeche Mode, Seal, The Cure and Madness to the US.

Other signings included Ice-T, The Pretenders, KD Lang, Lou Reed, The Undertones, and Richard Hell & the Voidoids.

Perhaps his most well known signings were the Ramones, Talking Heads, Madonna.

In 2005, Stein was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which hailed his ability to "hear the future".

With the sad passing of David Lindley, almost everyone has a story. I first met him when he arrived at my Club Can’t Tell in the ‘80s. No, he wasn’t solo. He was part of the mind-blowing, ultra talented group: Jo-EL Sonnier and Friends. Jo-El (if you don’t know him) is a Cajun accordion playing, singer-songwriter who was born to play exactly what he does. David Lindley shared the stage with a great, great band of musicians including Jo-El, Garth Hudson, Sneaky Pete, Albert Lee, Cactus Moser, Byron Berlin and a few others. David was a wonderful musician who was so talented on multiple instruments. In addition, he was warm, so friendly and very funny. The two shows they played over the years are among my favorite memories that I’ll treasure for the rest of my life.
