OOPS, I just learned that my business phone had stopped working. It’s fixed now, but it was quiet for weeks. So if you’ve tried to call me, even if you were able to leave a message, I DID NOT GET IT! Please don’t write me off because of AT&T inefficiency. I’m open for business and have some dates still available for this year. Thanks! 🌸🌹🌺🌷🌻🌼🪻

My Easter Lily from last year! I planted basically a stock (with the flowers cut off it is a stalk) and planted in my yard. I had no expectations. I looked a few weeks ago and the stalks were 3 now, wow, I had no idea this initial stock would do that. And, now I have 2 stocks blooming! Such joy!

It feels so good to work on flowers again. Had a wedding today and completely forgot to take pictures. 🤦‍♀️. Out of practice after being closed for 10 months because of shoulder surgery and back problems. I’m back at it and loving it.

The naked truth about a florist:

We love flowers.
We love every aspect of the flower. The journey it makes to our shops and allows us to participate in its journey.
And along the way, florists get our share of nicks and nacks - not just in our backs.

The lugging and lifting of floral creations, supplies, and oh those water buckets!

The stripping and snipping of thorny stems, slicing their way into our skin.

The late night designing.
The early morning deliveries.

The all day standing and working on our feet.

The last minute wish to grant.
The desire to make dreams come true.

The head bumping, hand cutting, knee breaking moments we ignore.

We work through concussions, bleeding fingers, swollen limbs, and our own heartbreak.

Being a florist means to do for others, create memories, and most importantly deliver messages of love, comfort, and healing.

The petals and oils of healing pass through our fingers keeping our spirits lifted.

However underneath the smiles, and beneath the fabric of our aprons is where we must care.

So often we neglect our own needs to get an order done.
We honor that working with flowers is precious, perishable, and priority.

Our hands, our backs, our knees, our legs, our families, our life…we wouldn’t want it any other way but we do need to keep ourselves healthy to keep make it another day.

Tomorrow more work will call our name and this past week - Valentines filled our days.

This weekend I wish all florist time to refresh themselves in rose petal baths and hydrating beverages.

Valentine’s Day takes a toll on the body. After 32 years in this industry, I am now tending to repair my own wear and tear.

First shoulder surgery 7/28/22. I am back to work after 6 months of recovery. Can I just say, most painful I have ever experienced!

PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR 2023!

What is Viva Magenta?

Pantone’s Color of The Year, Viva Magenta 18-1750, vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.

This year’s Color of The Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.

In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.

Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.

Another successful final exam for the Preston Bailey Floral Design 1 course. I told this student it looked like she was in a flower shop. This was a Spanish speaking student so we had to have a translator on the zoom. It's funny tho, with my limited Spanish and her limited English, we were able to communicate pretty well. 😊 Flowers were the great bridge this day.

Galina’s birthday flowers! I don’t know if this was a surprise or not. I worked with her husband’s secretary who was planning the party. Never met her before yesterday at the restaurant when I was setting up. I have to think Galina was very happy! Happy 40th birthday to you. More centerpieces than I’m showing here. Just enough to get the theme shown. The restaurant was not ready to put all the flowers in their right places yet.

Another successful final exam! Students are required to make a corsage, boutonnière, 2 bouquets, a pomander and a centerpiece. They are given a standard list of flowers. In some instances, the student cannot obtain the recommended flowers because they are not available in their country. This student could not buy enough carnations for the pomander, so she used mums. Real life experience. Because in today’s environment, the shortage of flowers is REAL! They have increased in price 30%. In my 31 years in the floral biz, I’ve never seen a price increase like this.

Another successful final exam completed yesterday. This is for the Preston Bailey Fundamentals of Floral Design Course that I wrote in conjunction with Preston. We offer it in English and Spanish. This was a Spanish speaking student, so we need an interpreter on the Zoom video. Jacqueline passed with flying colors. The final exam consists of showing me how to process flowers, making 2 bouquets, 1 pomander, 1 corsage, 1 boutonniere and 1 centerpiece. We have a standard list of flowers for the final exam, but, literally, my students are around the world and not all flowers are available in all countries. So we improvise. Jacqueline is located in So. California. The worst final exam was with a student in India. The internet connection kept going down and what should have taken 2 hours or less took 4 hours and required and extension to another day.
