3 Things You Didn’t Know About Living in Downtown Sacramento

Set in the northern portion of the Central Valley, and stretching between the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers all the way to the Sierra Nevada foothills, the city was recognized as Time magazine’s “Most Diverse and Integrated City in America” and one of the five “most livable” regions in America. The mélange of attractions gives Sacramento great appeal to both homebuyers and visitors with easy access to shopping, fine dining, theater, 19 area museums (including tours of the State Capitol), Sacramento Kings basketball games, rustic Gold-Rush Era charm in Old Sac, biking/jogging trails along the scenic American River Parkway and more.

More Record-Breaking Heat Could Hit Sacramento

Potentially record-breaking heat will continue throughout Northern California for the next few days. Monday’s forecast high temperature in Sacramento is 107°. The record temperature for June 19 in Sacramento is 106°, which was set in 1988. Modesto could also set a temperature record with a forecast high of 108°, which is 3 degrees higher than the June 19, 1981 record temperature of 105°.

Think Rent Is High in California? Here’s Why It Probably Will Get Higher

If you’re a renter in California concerned about the high cost of living here, or looking to purchase your first home, your prospects aren’t looking up.

“It was already bad before, but it’s getting worse,” said David Shulman, a senior economist for the Anderson Forecast. “California is still attracting high-income people, who are creating an enormous amount of wealth, but low and middle-income people like teachers are leaving because housing has become extraordinarily expensive.”

“By not building enough housing, we are driving up evictions and homelessness, pushing people out of our state and jeopardizing the success of young people,” said state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco in a recent statement as Senate took up a range of bills aimed at boosting supply and streamlining construction of affordable housing.

California’s housing crisis will likely worsen without state action. Rents will likely continue to rise, and for first-time homebuyers, it will be increasingly difficult to purchase.

Is the Uber Phenomenon Killing Transit in Sacramento?

The opening of the Golden 1 Center downtown last fall was billed as a rare opportunity for Sacramento Regional Transit to attract new riders. The agency stepped up its game, scrubbing trains, bolstering security and improving customer service.

By many accounts, it made a good impression. Yet new numbers show SacRT ridership on buses and trains has dropped 12 percent since last summer.

Nationally, transit experts point to many factors, including low gas prices that cause more people to get back in their cars. Others point out that poorly funded transit agencies, SacRT included, don’t provide sufficient service to be useful to many.

The most provocative possibility is what transit officials call the “Uber phenomenon.” App-based ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft have arrived on the scene in cities across the country, siphoning riders from traditional, or “legacy,” transit.

Sacramento Regional Transit has seen ridership drop, despite drawing solid crowds during Golden 1 Center events downtown. Uber, Lyft and other ride-share services are providing competition for public transit agencies.

Banking on Resurgent Downtown Sacramento

The new Tri Counties Bank downtown branch is meant to be prominent and inclusive, which is why it has glass walls with glass offices at the corner of 8th and K streets.

“We wanted a feeling of openness inside the branch,” said Scott Robertson, head of branch banking with Tri Counties, which has 67 branches. The bank also wanted the downtown location to be part of the resurgence of downtown Sacramento with Golden 1 Center and other developments around K Street, he said.

Sacramento Daily High Temperature History

Ever wonder what about the history of weather patterns in Sacramento?

The heatmap below color codes each day in a given row with a color corresponding to either the high temperature, low temperature, or precipitation in inches. Each row is a calendar year. Each column in each row is a day of the year. The higher density of dark red and orange cells in recent years shows the trend of hotter temperatures in the summer months in Sacramento.

); daily high temperatures, daily lower temperatures, and daily precipitation, as well as the number of days with maximum temperature greater than or equal to 90.0° F. Data source:

Theater for All

In April, Sacramento’s Intrepid Theatre Lab staged its inaugural production, “Cock.” We caught up with Artistic Director Casey McClellan—who worked in theater in New York for seven years before relocating to Sacramento—and Marketing Director Rachel Smith to learn more about the new venture.

McClellan and Producing Director Greg Foro hope to cultivate a new, young, diverse audience of theater-goers. “There’s a hunger and need for it in Sacramento,” says McClellan.

A Community Came Together to Save This Historic Folsom Bridge

Folsom is a city racing to become bigger and more modern. But a group of residents recently succeeded in persuading the city to save a small piece of its history – the Gold Creek Bridge.

It’s a little-known, little-used, 102-year-old span that carries Orangevale Avenue over a wooded ravine so secluded it feels like it’s lost somewhere in the foothills, even though it’s just two blocks from busy Greenback Lane.

The bridge was built two years before the famous and far busier Rainbow Bridge, which sits a mile to the east. In fact, the concrete arched bridge is a “mini me” version of the Rainbow Bridge. Same basic design. Same designer.

Engineers, preservationists and others in the Folsom community came together to save the 102-year-old Gold Creek Bridge.

You Won’t Believe Sacramento’s New Late Night Show

Everyone in the Red Museum is a little unsure what exactly to expect with this local late-night talk show experiment, including hosts Michael Cella and Shahera Hyatt, who nervously pace around the venue. Other random crew members scramble around holding clipboards and setting up instruments. The audience of roughly 50 people sits on old benches that face the stage, which is set with a red velvet couch, a small coffee table and a gaudy flower-covered chair. In other words, this is the punk rock version of a late-night talk show.

Cella and Hyatt say they created the series to make a platform for Sacramento fame, whether it’s through music, art, comedy or activism. Other live show series, like High Anxiety Variety Show!, operate more as a voice of the cutting-edge artists you might never have heard of before. Cella and Hyatt want not only to make getting on their stage a badge of honor, but also to create a judgment-free zone to talk about the political and social issues in Sacramento that affect us all.

The Latest Show props up local musicians, comedians and activists to look at serious issues through a lighthearted lens.

Sacramentans Couldn’t Care Less About Their Sports Stadiums, Survey Says

We love our parks in Sacramento. But apparently many of us could not care less about pro sports stadiums.

Just 4 percent of people recently surveyed in the Sacramento area said spectator sports venues are “the single most important civic amenity to their quality of life.” At the same time, 54 percent ranked parks and trails as their most prized amenity.

Valley Vision and Sacramento State survey finds that more people in Sacramento consider parks, rivers and museums important than pro sports venues.

On display for the very first time in California, guests of all ages will be fascinated by the dramatic and interactive Leonardo da Vinci “Machines in Motion” international traveling exhibit coming soon to the Aerospace Museum of California. Forty impressive machine replicas will be on special display, occupying nearly 9,000-square foot of space inside the Museum. The Exciting History of Music in Sacramento

It’s been 25 years since the first SAMMIES award show but, of course, the local scene dates back decades before SN&R started handing out awards to area musicians. Still, we wanted to celebrate the SAMMIES’ quarter-century achievement and quickly realized no retrospective could do it justice. Instead, we turned to some of the people who helped make the scene what it is today, asking them to share memories as well as thoughts on how it’s changing. Their answers aren’t just steeped in nostalgia—they’re insightful and revealing of a tightknit community built on camaraderie, talent and hustle.

Sacramento musicians reflect on the last 25 years—and beyond.
