3 Confidence Hacks Magicians Can Learn from Public Speakers

Great public speakers have a presence that captivates their audience, commands attention, and delivers their message with clarity and confidence.

As magicians, we can borrow from their playbook to enhance our performances and eliminate stage fright.

Here are three confidence hacks that public speakers use—ones you can start applying to your magic right away.

1. Master the “Power Pause”
One of the biggest mistakes nervous magicians make is rushing through their tricks.

Great speakers, on the other hand, pause intentionally—before they speak, after an important point, and when they want to let something sink in.

Why it works for magic:
�✔ Slowing down makes you look more in control and builds suspense.
�✔ It gives your audience time to process the trick, making the impact stronger.
�✔ It helps you breathe and settle your nerves, reducing visible anxiety.

2. Own the Stage with Strong Body Language

Public speakers own their space—they don’t shrink, fidget, or avoid eye contact. Instead, they:
�✔ Stand tall with open body language (no crossing arms or slouching).
�✔ Use purposeful gestures instead of nervous fidgeting.
�✔ Make eye contact with different sections of the audience.
�💡 Confidence is 50% posture and presence—if you act confident, you will start to feel it.

3. Practice Out Loud (Not Just in Your Head)

Speakers rehearse their speeches out loud, standing up, and using full expression—not just by reading silently.
