As much as we hate to admit it, colder weather is quickly approaching. Itโs time to do a little winter maintenance to help our perennials thrive this spring.
All gardens are different; some may have plants youโll need to cut back, others you may leave untouched and some may need to be dug up and moved to a sheltered location.
Here are a few steps to help your winterizing process!
Step 1: Removing all dead, dying and diseased foliage:
You more then likely have been doing this all growing season, but now is a great time to pay the extra attention making sure all foliage around the base of the plant is cleaned up. You do not want a build up of matted leaves under you plant during the winter months, which invites excess moisture and bugs to your plant.
Step 2: To prune or not to prune:
Some perennials have beneficial elements to leaving them unpruned in the winter months. These plants offer seeds for birds and tall stalks to catch snow and leave a nice winter interest to your garden:
Astilbe
Bee Balm
Bellflower
Black-Eyed Susan
Cardinal Flower
Chrysanthemums
Coral Bells
Delphinium
Dianthus
Echinacea
False Indigo
Foxgloves
Hellebore
Hens & Chicks
Lavender
Milkweed
Ornamental Grasses
Pachysandra
Russian Sage
Sea Holly
Sedum
Snapdragon
Thyme
Yarrow
Other perennials are best to trim back to help keep pests and rot away. However, fight the urge to trim back these plants until theyโve died back naturally and after the first hard frost. These plants use their leaves to create and store energy so clipping them too soon will not allow the plant to do so. After the first frost, or theyโve died back themselves when the plant is entering dormancy, is the best time to prune back to 3-6 inches above ground. A list of perennials to consider giving a hard prune:
Anemone
Aster
Catmint
Columbine (leave the young leaves around the base of the plant)
Corydalis
Daylily
Geranium
Hardy Hibiscus
Hollyhock (leave the young leaves around the base of the plant)
Host
