In the seventeenth century, the violin moved from the outskirts of society to the more respectable palaces of culture, thanks to a cadre of pioneering composers who elevated the musical language of the humble fiddle. Our season concludes with an ode to these innovators, with works by Muffat, Rosenmüller, Schmelzer, and Biber

Anna Christofaro, soprano | Paul Jacobson and Immanuel Davis, traverso | Marc Levine, violin | Julie Elhard, viola da gamba | Donald Livingston, harpsichord

This program begins with a suite of Bach arias for soprano with obbligato flute and violin. The premier of a cantata by Paul Jacobson concludes the concert. The new work, B+A+C+H—Lament to Jubilation, incorporates the BACH theme (Bb-A-C-B), which has been employed by composers from the time of J.S. Bach to the present. The text of the cantata comprises paraphrases by Paul of Psalm 42 (“As the deer desires the waterbrooks. . .”) and of three poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. This poetry reflects the fears and joys of our present day realities and dreams.

This concert is co-presented with the Bach Society of Minnesota, as part of the Minnesota Bach Festival.

Dear Lyra Baroque Friends,

We are so excited to present you with a full and beautiful season of concerts both in person and live-streamed. Your financial and moral support has been tremendously important in our ability to adapt and grow during the past two years. Our musicians, staff, and board of directors have faced every new challenge with optimism and possibility for which I am so grateful.

Orchestra Concerts – Four Orchestra Concerts will be presented live in Saint Paul and Rochester with the Saint Paul concert live-streamed. Our guest artists include Cléa Galhano, Chloe Fedor, the Grinnell Singers under the direction of John Rommereim, Maria Jette, and Immanuel Davis.

Chamber Concerts – Eight Chamber Concerts will be presented live in either Wayzata or Rochester with a Friday lunchtime concert live-streamed from The Baroque Room. This series is casual and fun, featuring our amazing local musicians doing what they do best: Performing on period instruments, giving you a glimpse of the incredible and specialized art through instrument demonstrations, speaking, answering questions, and of course, inspiring performance.

Education – Invite Lyra to perform at your school! We are MPR Class Notes Artists this season and you can book Lyra for FREE to visit your classroom. Featuring a diverse program of music called “Dialogues: Early Music in the World,” Lyra musicians introduce baroque instruments and music with baroque origins from Western Europe, Greece, Lebanon, Brazil, Spain, including both Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish tunes. Contact [email protected] to request Lyra.

A NOTE ON COVID: Based on the information we have at this moment, we are looking forward to performing for you live. The safety of our audience and musicians are at the forefront of our planning. To perform for you with the safety of everyone in mind, we require proof of either full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours prior to attending a concert. All audience members and staff will be required to wear masks. We ask that you enjoy our concerts through the live-stream option if feeling unwell.

We look forward to sharing another inspiring year with you.

Sincerely,

Tami Morse

The Grand Tour with Chloe Fedor

The tradition of Grand Tours spans from the early 17th century with horses and carriages up through the 19th century with its steam locomotion. Its roots hark further back to medieval pilgrimages and its remnants remain today as GT badges on cars. During the baroque, this version of a gap year took generations of travelers from their homes to visit the historic capitols of Europe seeking cultural illumination. Pack your bags and get your passport for a musical journey to Paris, Rome, Leipzig, and London with violinist Chloe Fedor.

To those of you who attended the show this past week, we hope you enjoyed Lyra 36th season's final score!

Immanuel, Paul, and Donald assemble a body of French music from Marais to Leclair in a collection entitled Frankensuite. This assemblage (it’s alive!) is followed by a new work by Paul Jacobson entitled Overture in Three Movements for Two Traversi and Harpsichord. The program (and season) concludes with a Suite of Famous (and Infamous) Women: Trios from Telemann’s Der Getreue Music Meister. The premiere of the new trio explores a scenario in which various 18th century composers meet up with an assortment of 20th century composers. The results are a surprise to both centuries.
