The tea-colored waters of the Satilla River sure do make our souls sing 🥰

Did you know natural elements cause the color of our river? Tannins are organic compounds released by decaying vegetation, like leaves and roots, in the surrounding wetlands and forests! These tannins give our river a characteristic "blackwater" appearance and are completely natural.

While tannins may make the water look dark, they are harmless and play an essential role in our river's unique ecosystem such as supporting a variety of plants and wildlife that have adapted to these conditions. Tannins also help protect the river's biodiversity by creating a slightly acidic environment, discouraging invasive species!

I’ve been talking a lot about how gators can survive with their noses sticking up out of the ice, and how Big Mac has been positioning himself to deal with this if it comes! Here’s a great example showing it in North Carolina!!

Alligators go into brumation during this cold, a hibernation like state where all metabolic activity slows, allowing them to survive such cold. Our American crocodiles on the other hand would absolutely perish in these conditions, which is why south Florida is the northern extent of American croc range, but since gators are the most cold tolerant crocodilian they range up to North Carolina.
