Next time you are near your favorite garden center, stop in to see what plants they have that might work in containers for fall. Grasses, shorter perennials, and cool-loving annuals will be perfect. Nurture them until the season turns, then create a one-of-a-kind planter to enjoy through the fall holidays!

Great read on telling the difference between hydrangeas - what’s your favorite?!

Always trying to remember the different types of hydrangeas?
Here are the five common types to help you identify them:

Bigleaf Hydrangea - Hydrangea macrophylla
-Bloom shape: Large, round clusters (mophead) or flat-topped with outer petals surrounding a central cluster (lacecap)
-Colors: Can vary from pink to blue depending on soil acidity
-Leaves: Large, oval-shaped leaves
-Note: Typically blooms on old wood, so pruning at the wrong time can affect flowering.
💮
Smooth Hydrangea - Hydrangea arborescens
-Bloom shape: Large, round, snowball-shaped clusters
-Colors: Primarily white, but some newer cultivars offer pink or green hues
-Leaves: Smooth, heart-shaped leaves
-Note: Blooms on new wood, so pruning in late winter or early spring is okay.
💮
Panicle Hydrangea - Hydrangea paniculata
-Bloom shape: Cone-shaped clusters that start green, turn white, then pink or red as the season progresses
-Colors: Green, white, pink, and red
-Leaves: Oval-shaped leaves with serrated edges
-Note: Blooms on new wood, so pruning in late winter or early spring is ideal
💮
Oakleaf Hydrangea - Hydrangea quercifolia
-Bloom shape: Large, lacecap-shaped clusters
-Colors: White turning to pink or brown as the season progresses
-Leaves: Oak-shaped leaves that turn vibrant red, purple, and orange in fall
-Note: Blooms on old wood, so avoid heavy pruning
💮
Mountain Hydrangea - Hydrangea serrata
-Bloom shape: Lacecap-shaped clusters
-Colors: Pink to deep red to purple
-Leaves: ovate and serrated leaves
-Note: Blooms on old and new wood, cut back stems by 1/3 in August

The dog days of Summer are here ✨ August is always bittersweet - Summers coming to an end, Fall is right around the corner, and before you know it Winter will be knocking on our doors !

What should you be doing in the garden this month ?🌸

1.Weeding
Be sure to keep those weeds under control so they don’t compete with your plants for water and nutrients. Some weeds will compete with your actual plants and potentially kill them by taking over.

2. Deadhead plants
Did you see our post about deadheading ? Remove dead or spent flowers to encourage more flowering or improve the plant’s appearance. Can be done with perennials, annuals, and some shrubs.

3. Order bulbs
August is a good time to start ordering spring-blooming bulbs for fall planting. Plan now for next springs blooms!🌷 Interested in having us install bulbs for you? Send us a message !

4. Houseplants
IF NEEDED, summer is a good time to repot your pot bound plants while they are still in thier growing stages - it’s also a good time of year since you can bring them outside and have less of a mess inside. 🪴

5. Pests & Fungus
Raise your hand if your having a bunny problem this year 🐰🙋🏼‍♀️ Granulars and Sprays can be a great helping in keeping those pesky little guys away. Liquid Fence & Repels All are some of our favorites.
Moles? Looking into a solar sonic spike.
Be on the lookout for Fungus - Powdery Mildew, Black Spot or Rust to name a few.

Fine Gardening alert! ✨swipe✨ to see the before - Deadheading is a pruning technique that involves removing spent flowers or foliage from plants to encourage new growth and re-flowering. It can also help plants look neater and extend their flowering period by weeks or months since they are not putting all their energy into seed production.

Junipers can get unruly! Don’t worry, our fine gardening skills can help with that. Who doesn’t love a good before and after ?

Fine gardening is that extra special touch that brings landscaping from dull or average to “WOW”.
These finishing touches, from detailed flower bed care such as deadheading or light pruning to container pot maintenance, bring a polished look to your landscape.
For homeowners, that means less work for you and more time to enjoy your ✨beautiful ✨outdoor living space.
For commercial property owners, it means a boost in curb appeal and a more desirable property🌟

Hydrangea arborescens or more commonly know as Smooth Hydrangea is a flowering shrub that is native to the eastern United States. 🌿
Some of our favorite varieties: annabelle, invincibelle, & incrediball

This beauty is known for its large, creamy white, dome-shaped flowers that bloom for months starting in May lasting through September. 🐝

The flowers are honey-scented and can be used in a variety of ways, including hedges, mixed gardens, and one of our favorites - rain gardens. ✨

This property has come a long way from the first time we visited - March of 2023 there was zero landscaping other than the contractor grade plantings along the front walkway.

The Floral Hound LLC has since added the bed you see here, beds around the mailbox, back deck, and at the top of the driveway. We’ve also added in a Kousa dogwood, some fruit trees, plus a beautiful white birch.

Others things done around the property were adding cobblestones along the driveway, hydroseeding, adding edge restraints, and a patio/privacy fencing for the clients hot tub.
