With Halloween tomorrow, we thought it would be fun to share some antique Halloween postcards and Halloween traditions from the Victorian era! Did you know that Halloween games and treats were not just for children? In this era, Halloween was also for romance. Popular Halloween party games included ways to guess your romantic future!

One game involved putting on a blindfold and running out into the garden to pluck a cabbage. If the cabbage was difficult to pull out, that predicted a relationship that would involve a lot of effort. If the roots were straight, it meant your husband would be handsome; if crooked, he would be ugly. If the roots were clean, that predicted poverty, while dirt stuck to the roots meant wealth.

Another popular game was called “Snap Apple” in which an apple would be hanging from the ceiling by a string. The player would try to bite the apple with their hands tied behind their backs. The first one to successfully take a bite would be the first to marry. Another Halloween game that may be more well-known (and still played today!) was “Bobbing for Apples.” The first to grab an apple would have their affections returned by the one they loved.

Another parlor game involved hiding trinkets inside a Halloween pudding, or fruit cake. Someone would be selected to slice the treat and pass it around to the guests. If you unearthed a coin in your slice of pudding, it's said you would become wealthy; if you found a ring, it meant marriage was in your future; and if you found a thimble, it meant you were destined to be a spinster or old bachelor.
