If there is an underground favorite at BCR it's probably the Mountaineer room! This room was originally built as the library for the mansion, and was later converted into an additional guest room. The spacious living area and amazing vaulted ceilings really give it character!

I am a sucker for a lake hike - the best part is jumping in at the end! Here are some of the top lake hikes in the area!
1. Hancock Lake Trail - This trail starts at Hancock Lake and provides great scenery along the way (and more lake views!). The full trail is 8.7 miles and moderately difficult.
2. Water Dog Lakes Trail - The views at the end of this trail are nothing short of epic! 3.2 miles out-and-back it's a moderately challenging route with a steep incline.
3. Island Lake Trail - More spectacular scenery on this 2.9 mile out-and-back hike! There is even an old mine to explore.

Salida is a town with a lot of character (and characters!) and the best way to experience that is to come out for one of our festivals! These are the top three most popular festivals each year:
1. Colorado Brewers Rendezvous: Brewers from around the state gather for this epic brewfest in Riverside Park. Expect food and of course some of the best and most unique beer in the state!
2. Salida Fiber Festival: While it may sound super niche, this is actually a very popular festival in Salida! Pick up all sorts of raw materials (yarn, apaca wool, and more) or find a unique piece of finished art.
3. FIBArk: This is by far the most popular and well-known festival in Salida and deeply loved by the locals! While there are some serious whitewater races in this festival, it is most known for its goofy events like the "Raft Rodeo" where this photo came from. Contestants attempt to flip each others' rafts in costume and hilarity ensues.

How many of these hikes have you done? These are the top-rated hikes near Salida on .
1. Sand Dunes Trail: The #1 rated hike on AllTrails! Right next to Salida's S Mountain, this 3.2 mile hike is a moderate climb. Thank you for maintaining this and many other trails in the area!
2. Mount Shavano: One of Colorado's famous "fourteeners"! This is definitely a challenging route but so worth it to stand at 14,000 ft! The trail is 11.2 miles long.
3. Badger Creek Trail: A bit out of the way which means you are likely to have this trail to yourself! This is an easy 2.2 mile hike along Badger Creek.
4. Arkansas River Trail from Hecla Junction: This is a gorgeous stroll along the Arkansas River. It's a 2.1 out-and-back trail.

We hope you have a chance to get out there and enjoy the mountains this summer!

The beautiful brick buildings in downtown Salida are actually the result of a tragedy - the town burned down TWICE - once in 1886 and once in 1888. When local businesses rebuilt they chose brick which was less likely to catch fire. Learn more about Salida's history at the -Museum ! And thank you to the museum for this interesting fact.

As a lifelong traveler I really appreciate the unexpected when visiting a new place! Here are some local favorites:1. Salida Tintype: Local photographer, has a natural light studio (very close to the ranch) where he can create a tintype masterpiece of you and your family. This is a historic film process and very unique! Tim does everything from artistic styled shoots like this one, to traditional weddings photos - all captured on a sheet of tin and ready to go on your wall! Photo of my friend

2. Colorado Gator Park - The in Alamosa is home to a whole lot of gators. The park is a rescue for reptiles and has a surprisingly large variety. Tour the park and meet celebrity gators like Morris, the gator featured in Happy Gilmore. My favorite part is feeding the giant tortoises at the park!

3. Badfish Surf Shop: Yep, a surf shop in the Rocky Mountains! This won't be a surprise at all if you are a fan of river surfing - a relatively new sport where you actually surf in the river. Salida recently built a standing wave (the Scout Wave) that is ideal for river surfers. caters to this very cool new sport and also sells apparel, river tubes and more.

4. UFO Watchtower: Looking to catch a glimpse of a traveler from another planet? This stop is for you! Site of many alleged UFO sightings, the watchtower is an interesting stop for both believers and non-believers. Check out the sculpture garden with a collection of curiosities or view the wide open sky (and the Sand Dunes) from the watchtower.

5. Christmas Mountain: The absolute most endearing thing in Salida, in my opinion, is Christmas Mountain. For many years now, local volunteers have laboriously strung Christmas lights over S Mountain to create the worlds' largest Christmas tree! Check it out between Thanksgiving & New Years.
