It’s also a genus famous for its “fragrances” which mimic rotting flesh many times protruding from a hinged lip that rocks with every movement in the breeze

📝 When I started growing orchids, this was the group that taught me all the valuable lessons-understanding when (and when not) to water, the importance of good light, how diurnal temperature and day length matter and especially how to repot. Back then many people grew 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙮𝙖 and so many people started growing with a division given to them by a friend. If you can learn to grow 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙮𝙖 you can learn to grow nearly anything

Known for many decades as 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙮𝙖 𝙜𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙨 (which means “giant”) , 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙮𝙖 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙬𝙞𝙘𝙯𝙞𝙞 is a distinct member of the labiate section. It’s sheer size can become monstrous with time, and even though I have grown some gigantic specimens of the 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙮𝙖 family, 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙮𝙖 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙬𝙞𝙘𝙯𝙞𝙞 becomes the biggest overall. A really large 𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙮𝙖 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙚 is something to behold but they grow more round and not as vertical while 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙘𝙚𝙬𝙞𝙘𝙯𝙞𝙞 is known for its tall flower spikes with up to 10, 12” blooms

📝 𝘽𝙪𝙡𝙗𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙢 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧 is fascinating 😉 it’s flowers have always reminded me of singular, chunky examples found in the 𝘾𝙞𝙧𝙧𝙝𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙢 section of 𝘽𝙪𝙡𝙗𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙢 albeit with much more texture and less delicate finesse. The petals of this species are actually very course and have surprising weight to them

There are a few color forms recognized with the typical example have more maroon red coloration to the flower than this citron yellow type (our favorite). For many years we grew the “Thailand” type which has very dark flowers with the same bright purple hairs and was recognized as 𝘽𝙪𝙡𝙗𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙢 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧 𝙫𝙖𝙧. 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙯𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙚 but was later described as a new species 𝘽𝙪𝙡𝙗𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙢 𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙮𝙞 . 📝White Vandas are not common, in fact there are very few Vanda species with clear white flowers and just a couple with white as a base color. Looking at the species composition of this hybrid, the closest color resemblence is 𝙑𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖 𝙡𝙪𝙯𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖 which has smallish white blooms with a fuschia lip and matching fuschia spots. But 𝙑. 𝙡𝙪𝙯𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖 represents just 1.56% of the total DNA of 𝗩. 𝗠𝘂𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗴 and the shape and size is nothing like its distant relative, so how did we get to these large, almost pure white blooms with just a tasteful hint of fuschia? Patience ⏳

Long-term multigenerational breeding in simple terms is growing up a group (sometimes hundreds or thousands of seedlings) and selecting for the most desirable traits (this could be color, size, floriferousness, etc) and then repeating this process through many generations of out crosses. Unusual traits can be expressed in just a few plants, these plants can then be used for further breeding where these unusual traits can have a higher probablity of occurence. If say, lighter colored flowers are selected and bred with other lighter colored flowers, you may get seedlings with very light or even white flowers

Some species are even known to "supress" or "enhance" specific colors (i.e. a yellow species could be known to supress pink, resulting in a yellow x pink = yellow etc) and in other situations a species may be an enhancer (i.e. a yellow species could be known to enhance pink or red flowers by making them brighter or more vivid etc). Understanding this can be very helpful when a specific outcome is the goal

📝I’ve always been a huge fan of this genus for their brightly colored and fragrant flowers that are typically hidden by foliage but are amazing non the less. A unique characteristic of many in the genus is its lip that has formed a distinctive “pouch” almost like a mini slipper

📝 The vibrantly colored blooms can occur any time of year on this fairly compact species. They emerge directly from the leaf axle individulally from brown papery sheaths that always appear to envelop the buds until they fully open. 📝 I try not to ever write off anything, especially when it comes to different orchids. We’ve all been guilty of it...“I don’t like (blank), I can’t grow (blank), (blank) is ALWAYS (blank). Typically the minute you write something off or speak in extremes, you will be proven wrong. I’ve had this shown so many times in orchid growing that it has taught me to be more open to the fact that anything is possible in orchid growing. And writing off an entire genus based on what you think you know typically means you don’t know that genus well enough 🤔

I’ve always been a huge fan of any of the mottled leaf 𝙋𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨 species 🐆 Interestingly, this prominent attribute seems to be recessive and is lost in most all primary hybrids (where the other parent is not mottled) and is completely gone from complex hybrids. This is why most hobbyists not familiar with these plants are shocked when they see this beautiful foliage and find that it is a 𝙋𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨 😁

The same could be said for fragrance. MANY 𝙋𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨 species are fragrant but again, this attribute is lost in breeding for large, flat, long-lasting flowers where fragrance is not present (or needed) when flowers last for months giving pollinators a longer time frame to do there thing. You will find that fragrance and short lived flowers and non fragrant and long lasting flowers almost always go hand in hand (but not ALWAYS)

No matter how many hybrids I make I will always consider myself a species grower. Successfully growing naturally occurring specimens is where my passion has always been. So most of the small amount of breeding I do focuses on reproducing these orchid species to make them available to the wider market. That being said, I’m also interested in primary hybrids (that is 2 different species crossed together, anything beyond that is a “complex” hybrid) since many of these can also occur naturally where 2 species overlap in habitat. 📝 Orchids will never cease to amaze. To say they are diverse is a huge understatement. And when you take a huge genus like 𝘿𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙪𝙢, diversity even within its own genus doesn’t begin to describe the differences you’ll encounter staying in this one group

I remember seeing an image of this species years back (2008?) and 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 wanting to grow it. I found a few plants eventually but it still remains a rarity in cultivation (we haven’t had plants for sale for a few years)

It’s large (to 8”) flowers can be very hard to capture since the blooms open after midnight and are typically closed by early morning but our collection plant occasionally will have a few open blooms when the sun comes up

📝 I’ve devised a simple test to determine whether you are a real orchid grower 😜 ask yourself, is flower longevity a major factor in determining desirability in a species?

Many orchid blooms would be considered ephemeral. That is, very short lived- with some species flower life may be as short as 1 to 10 days. (many are better measured in hours with blooms that only open during a 12 hour period of daylight 😬) But aren’t I supposed to be rewarded with months on end of blooms? I mean I have been taking care of this plant, right? If you can get past this for a moment, you could experience a fascinating natural phenomenon in many orchids 🤔

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 1- Flowering tends to be seasonally induced, with a spectacular show of many blooms with a flurry of color and fragrances designed to attract pollinators very quickly. Blooming will be specific- Spring, Fall,etc (think Stanhopeinae, Bulbophyllum, Cattleya, monsoonal Dendrobium etc) When these are in flower you know it! These are some of the showiest of all species and tend to last a couple of weeks but those tend to be the best couple of weeks of the year 🎆

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 2- Flowering is induced by a combination of seasonal changes & quick atmospheric changes (weather). They are VERY short lived flowers, some last a day, many only opening during the day & closing at night over a few days. A lot of these will also have great fragrances to attract potential pollinators and will bloom numerous times over the year. What they lack in longevity they make up for in frequency. Most of these plants can bloom anytime of the year (think Dendrobinae especially section Diplocalobium, many equatorial Phalaenopsoid genus, Bulbophyllum, Vanilla, etc) They typically occur in areas that have very little changes in seasonality
