Happy Veterans Day

The 369th United States Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the “Harlem Hellfighters,” was the first African American regiment of troops to reach the battlefields of World War I.

At the end of their service in the war, the 369th had spent 191 days in combat, the longest of any American regiment. The French government awarded the entire regiment the Croix de Guerre, a medal awarded for acts of bravery in conflicts against the enemy.

For many African Americans, World War I was an opportunity to reassert post-Civil War expectations of full citizenship, and they assumed participating in the war would help them achieve their own level of democracy at home. But soldiers who returned to the U.S. continued to be denied equal rights.
