Today is the perfect rainy, Fall day. The kind where you just want to snuggle up on the couch, drink a warm drink, and get lost in a good book or show.

My favorite part of rainy days are the rainbows that follow. Reminding me that storms don’t always last and there is beauty around the corner.

I’ve know Arielle since 2005. She was just a little girl with her whole life ahead. I watched her grow up and when her mom called to check my availability to photograph her wedding I was humbled.

I don’t often shoot same s*x couples and worried that I would be able to capture their relationship and their love effectively. After our first meeting my fears subsided as I could see how much Arielle and Mori meant to each other.

These two are about to become moms and I’m so grateful they trusted me to document the start of this chapter in their love story.

Not everybody loves cake… let them eat pie!

Similar to the exchanging of rings, the cake cutting is another ritualistic ceremony symbolic of the cooperative nature of marriage. One of the things I do is go over that symbolism with clients in planning to determine if and how they want to handle cake cutting as it should be personal to them.

Let’s talk about a tradition we wouldn’t be sad to see go…the receiving line. Too many couples get stuck standing in a line saying “hello” and “thank you for coming” instead of enjoying their wedding celebration. It is a celebration after all.

Here are three things you can do to avoid or mitigate the receiving line at your wedding.

1. Be blunt on your invitation. Something like, “The couple will be receiving guests from X-Y time. Program, dancing, celebrating to follow.” This gives all guests a heads up how long you will be in line for.

2. Cut the line. Morgan once worked a wedding where this was handled brilliantly. At the appointed time a member of the wedding planning staff stood at the end of the line. Any guests who arrived were greeted with a cheerful, “Thank you for coming. The couple is no longer receiving guests in this location. Please head to the reception area and you can give your congratulations to them during dinner or on the dance floor.” Everyone was still welcomed and the night was able to move on seamlessly.

3. If you are having a seated dinner eat fast and then between courses visit each table and chat for a bit. This might be our favorite option because you can spend more time with those you want to and quickly move on from the tables you aren’t as close with.

Weddings are all about family. The families you came from and the new family you are creating together. We include them all. The moments with family are the ones you’ll cherish. We highly recommend working with your planner, DJ, and photographer to create those unique moments that you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Here’s a not so secret secret, bridal bouquets are heavy! The most comfortable way to hold them is not always the most pretty. Our natural inclination is to hold them with our arms at a 90-degree angle often covering up the neckline and bodice of the dress.

Two things that will help you make sure you’re not hiding behind your flowers.
1. Try to keep the bulk of your bouquet at your belly button.
2. Start doing simple arm exercises today. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

In our book this is one of the quintessential movie moments we’ve immortalized. Capturing a split second where you can see how much a couple loves each other. Usually these moments are fleeting and soon forgotten. This shot wasn’t missed because we got to know the couple on more personal level. Part of our planning process is to find out what is important to you, the couple, so we can better focus our energies on the moments of your wedding day.

Side note: Did you know that Morgan was the photographer for the rehearsal dinner while spun the tunes? On the very next day at the wedding .leigh.powell rocked the mic and turn tables as DJ and Master of Ceremonies bringing their wedding celebration to life.
