He is imprisoned by his beliefs, he can walk through thoughts bars to freedom but he can’t see himself as a free man, he views his life as an imprisoned man and can only see things from that point of view. Some people can envision their lives and they only take steps in that direction (good or bad). He doesn’t see freedom as an option in his life because he has never felt free.
