Juneteenth commemorates the day when enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with Union soldiers and proclaimed that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved people were now free.

This momentous occasion is also known as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, and Black Independence Day. It serves as a reminder of the long and arduous struggle for freedom and equality faced by African Americans throughout history.
