Michael Jackson – August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009. How do you honor Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, father, humanitarian, and an extraordinary, legendary talent? It has been 13 years since his passing on June 25th and he is truly missed.

On this day in 1997 we released my second album “Trouble Is…” We knew we had something special but the fans reactions showed us just how special it really was. Still the longest reigning No. 1 Blues album in the history of the Billboard charts, the album produced a string of hit songs on Rock radio including the record breaking No. 1 single “Blue On Black”. The album won two Billboard Music Awards, was nominated for a Grammy and has sold millions of copies. Several of these songs are still highlights of our live performances when they are in the set list and it’s still a thrill to watch you all sing along to them. We have big plans for this album next year as it will be the 25th anniversary of its release so STAY TUNED!

Already, one year ago?

Edward Lodewijk Van Halen (January 26, 1955 – October 6, 2020)

He was the main songwriter and founder—with brother and drummer Alex Van Halen, bassist Mark Stone, and singer David Lee Roth—of the American rock band Van Halen. In 2012, he was voted number one in a Guitar World magazine reader's poll for "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". In 1972, with his brother Alex on drums, Eddie Van Halen formed the band that would become Van Halen. By 1974, it had the lineup that would make it one of the biggest groups in rock history: the two Dutch-born brothers, plus bassist Michael Anthony and singer David Lee Roth. Throughout the late 1970s and early '80s, Van Halen became increasingly successful. Early hits such as 1979's "Dance the Night Away" eventually gave way to the bestselling 1984 — the band's sixth album — which spawned the chart-topping "Jump," as well as flamboyant hits like "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher." But 1984's success only intensified tensions between the Van Halen brothers and David Lee Roth, who left the band in 1985 for a solo career that capitalized on his cheerful, outsize persona. The remaining members of Van Halen regrouped around former Montrose frontman Sammy Hagar, who helped the group top the charts with its next four albums: 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991) and Balance (1995) .Long known for his reclusiveness, Eddie Van Halen battled an assortment of health issues in recent decades, including hip-replacement surgery in 1999, a bout with tongue cancer in the early 2000s, a history of drug and alcohol abuse that led him to enter a rehabilitation facility in 2007 and surgery for diverticulitis in 2012. Eddie Van Halen remained extremely close with family. In addition to a lifelong working relationship with his brother, Alex, he tirelessly championed his son, Wolf, who joined Van Halen as bassist after the departure of Michael Anthony in 2006. He was married twice, to Valerie Bertinelli from 1981 to 2007, then Janie Liszewski from 2009 until his death .Van Halen was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. He died on October 6, 2020 from cancer at age 65.

Sammy used to play in Riverside Fairmount Park!

David Lauser a.k.a. Bro and I in 1970. We might have been calling ourselves The Big Bang, Manhole, or Skinny. Bro and I used to set up by ourselves, guitar and drums, in Riverside Fairmount Park.

They had a little amphitheater and we just went and did it without asking for permission. Nothing. There might be 7-10 people who would stop and listen. We didn't give a f**k, we just jammed. Loaded the truck back up at the end of the day.

Bro was a drummer on 'Standing Hampton,' 'Three Lock Box,' 'VOA,' 'I Never Said Goodbye,' and all Wabos records, starting with 'Red Voodoo.' We came from childhood.

That van took me right up to Montrose, 1972. It carried our equipment from the Inland Empire to San Francisco, back-and-forth for months every week, until we got a gig at the Peppertree lounge on Broadway in San Francisco on the off nights (Monday and Tuesday).

One thing led to another and Ronnie Montrose discovered me at a place called the Wharf Rat in San Francisco. That van was parked out front because we loaded our own equipment in and out every week. The rest I guess is history.

That van, if you read my book, is the one that my first wife Betsy’s dad and brother rebuilt the engine of and made it a new car in Rochester, New York 1969 (the year of Woodstock), so I could drive it back to California with Bucky and my wife Betsy, newly pregnant with Aaron (Happy birthday, 2/24!). Check the license plate, very interesting. I wore that f**king van out! When I joined Montrose, that van could barely make it up the hill, I forget who I even sold it to for $50.
