Since I was a young girl, I vividly recall being asked the ridiculous age old question of, “what do you want to be when you grow up”, and I have always had the same unwavering response. While many kids dreamed of being a ninja, firefighter or astronaut, I had different plans. At the ripe age of 3, my response was unabashedly, “I want to be my own boss” (I should mention that I come from a long line of entrepreneurs).
After graduating from the University of Southern California, I jumped into the business world head first at the highly respected financial institution of Merrill Lynch. I was going to be a woman kicking butt in a man’s world, but the universe had other plans. As it turns out, I strongly disliked my job. In fact, I spent my days longing for a change and ultimately, wrote the business plan for Blush Botanicals during my time there. I learned many invaluable lessons while there mostly about sales and checking your ego at the door, but I also learned something important about myself. I learned that in order for me to sell and truly be successful at selling, I had to be authentic and not only believe in what I was selling, but believe I was the best at it.
People often ask me how I got my start in flowers and to be completely honest, flowers found ME, my goal was to be a successful business owner and I had absolutely no background in flowers. Unsure as to what sort of business I wanted to start, I allowed my mind to wander. I was always pulled toward the creative industries. For me, the day came when a friend’s mother was throwing a party and asked for my help with the flowers. There was something about the raw beauty of flowers that pulled me in. In a world so full of technology, it was nice to feel grounded in something so natural and to get my hands dirty creating beauty instead of conceptualizing through a screen. After spending hours upon hours designing these flower arrangements, I was hooked and now I just needed to see if I could support myself in my new career. I ran the numbers and realized that this had the potential to be my future if I planned correctly and started small.
I opened my doors to my first company, Blush Botanicals, Inc. in 2009 and we quickly went from working out of a small garage space to a 2,000sqft warehouse within two years and a 5,000sqft warehouse a few short years later. Our initial business was creating small weekly arrangements for local restaurants and doing “delivery” florals as they came in. By differentiating ourselves from our competitors, creating consistent quality work and forming strong relationships within the industry, we steadily grew to become one of the most highly sought after floral design & styling companies in Southern California. I am so proud of the team we have built and the talent that continues to choose to work with us to make us what we are. It truly takes a village to put these large events together and it couldn’t be done without the amazing people we have met along the way. As we continue to grow I am thankful for every opportunity and client that honors us by believing in our vision. I am as excited today as I was the day we opened our doors to see how Blush continues to grow!
