Our hearts are deeply saddened to hear the news that Bob van Oosting, co-founder of Oceanic Arts passed away Oct 13. He was surrounded by family and, appropriately, co-workers from OA.

His contribution to Tiki Style, along with his partner Leroy Schmaltz is beyond measure. Oceanic Arts stands alone as a creative force of Tiki Style and we’re literally the man standing among thousands of carvers artisans that made a living creating Tiki bars.

When I first met Bob in the late 1980s I told him there was going to be a Tiki revival and he was going to see a lot of younger customers at OA soon. He was very skeptical to say the least. I’m glad he lived to see the day it occurred and I’m glad that he was honored before his retirement with three books documenting Oceanic Arts’ history and artifacts (published by Peekaboo Gallery)

We were lucky to have visited Bob this past summer. He was active and shared lots of stories. He made fresh orange juice and picked some oranges off his tree for us. He showed us his collections at home and told us of his plans to set up a home office to continue working on Oceanic Arts projects. Bob literally worked his entire life for Oceanic Arts and because of that, we have a rich history of Tiki Style that we continue to appreciate.

Travel over to the historic Catamaran Resort Hotel (est. 1958) for the Tiki Oasis Luau. With its original Polynesian motif, tropical landscaping with Tikis, and authentic Polynesian artifacts in the lobby galleries is the site of our Tiki Oasis 2024 kick-off event! The Catamaran Luau is a San Diego summer tradition on the shores of Mission Bay, the annual Sunset Luaus are a festive celebration of Polynesian food, music, and dance perfect for family and friends. Find a true Tiki Paradise amidst lush, tropical gardens, tranquil lagoons, and one mile of sandy beach at the historic Paradise Point Resort & Spa in Mission Bay. Join us this August and enjoy a sprawling outdoor marketplace, tiki art, rum tastings, five swimming pools, fine dining experiences, tropical cocktails, relaxing evenings on your own lanai and beach bonfires!
