Bissap Baobab Village/ Little Baobab 🇸🇳 Authentic West African Flavors in SF
🌍 Global Beats & Vibes
🎤 Event Host

Bissap Baobab Village, formerly comprised of both Bissap Baobab and Little Baobab, embodies the culture of San Francisco’s popular and international Mission District. Little Baobab, our current home base, is an intimate bistro and club located at 3388 19th Street between Mission & Capp Street and serves lunch from 11am to 2pm, with dinner service from 4pm onward. Artisan cocktails and renowned Afr

obeat events on Friday and Saturday nights add spice to Little Baobab's offerings. Baobab Village expresses the vision of founder Marco Senghor, born and raised in Dakar and educated in Paris. His deep knowledge and appreciation of French West African culture, food, and music infuses the enticing ambiance of his establishments. Little Baobab strives to create a sense of 'teranga,' which can be translated from Senegal's Wolof language to mean “hospitality.” Teranga is reserving the best part of the meal for one's guests; neighbors taking care of one another; being accepted for who you are. As restaurant owner, social entrepreneur, and a dedicated community member, Marco has infused teranga into Baobab Village, transforming 19th & Mission into a multicultural enclave. One can truly experience the diversity of San Francisco by visiting this West African oasis.

We opened Little Baobab in 1998, and it's incredible to think we're almost at 30 years! In the world of restaurants, that makes us practically dinosaurs, having far outlasted the typical lifespan of most eateries. If not for challenges like Covid and political shifts, we believe Little Baobab could have expanded across the Bay Area by now.

That said, our original home in the Mission is still going strong—despite some economic hurdles that only those in decision-making positions truly understand. But instead of looking back, we’re focused on what we have and shaking things up like a refreshing cocktail to breathe new life into Little Baobab!

So, if you come by to visit us again, don’t be surprised by some of the new changes. We’re excited to introduce a few fresh faces to the team: Jonathan, our new pop-up chef in the mornings, and Narcisse, who will be bringing art and creativity to our social media. A huge thank you to Anne, who’s been instrumental in guiding us toward this next chapter.

We’re also expanding our hours! Starting soon, we’ll be open Wednesday through Sunday, from 4:30 PM until midnight. As part of this new chapter, we’ll be focusing on traditional street food in our patio area, bringing you the bold flavors of dibi, inspired by the famous dibiterie. Expect deliciously grilled, seasoned lamb, flavorful seafood, and a menu full of comforting, mouth-watering dishes.

And by popular demand, we’re adding something new to the menu: Fufu. Think of it as our African mashed potatoes! Fufu is a beloved West African dish made from starchy vegetables like cassava or yams. They’re boiled, pounded, and transformed into a smooth, stretchy dough-like texture. It’s traditionally served alongside hearty stews and soups—and we can’t wait for you to taste it!

Thank you for your continued support. We’re excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait to share this next chapter of Little Baobab with you. We love you, and we love food. It’s a beautiful journey, and we’re grateful to gather together and share the joy of life and food with all of you.

"Like many of us, my heart is not at its best. But this is neither defeat nor the end. It takes resilience and strength. As I’ve said before, there are good people on both sides, and we need to bring together everyone who cares about our nation. The heart beneath is our GPS. Let’s all give our best and move forward.

And just as the Baobab tree stands strong, we're opening our doors wider than ever. Don’t miss our fantastic lineup this week!

Tonight: Karaoke with DJ Purple

Friday: Super Ricky Nativo, followed by Freqshow

Saturday: Our Afro Happy Salon gathering and DJ Bangando with Afrobeats to close

Sunday: Flamenco

Join us for a week of great music and community!"

"Why should Baobab be the one elected?

Well, isn’t it obvious? I mean, come on—hasn’t Baobab already become the symbol of true international unity? It’s not just a tree, folks; it’s a gathering of all the beautiful shades of humanity! I know you’ve wondered: 'How on earth did Little Baobab manage to bring together Asians, Latinos, Blacks, Caucasians, and even their pets?' Well, I'll let you in on a secret: the soul doesn’t have a color, and the heartbeat sounds the same in every rainbow-colored chest. Even a Million a day will not buy a beautiful soul.

Now, as election season approaches, we see candidates feverishly trying to mend the deep divides in this country. But here at Baobab, we don’t just try to unite people under some temporary slogan—we live it every day! Under Baobab’s broad, welcoming branches, we are a natural umbrella for everyone, not just because it’s trendy, but because love and unity are ingrained in our DNA.

The truth is, we are loved by everyone, simply because we genuinely love everyone back! So, whether you cast your vote for me today or save it for a quantum vote in your heart, know that we’re here for you. All candidates should come see firsthand how difficult, yet rewarding, it is to break the chains of division that still exist in our society.

And while we’re hoping to inspire honesty and fairness in all candidates, we’re also prepared to give our honest approval only to those who’ve truly earned it. So, my friends, let’s make Baobab the symbol of not just an election, but a celebration of unity in diversity. After all, who doesn’t love a candidate that can break bread—and barriers—at the same time?"

We love and bless our international community

Tres solo from Cuban Jam Session at , every 4th Sunday of the month.

The Tres is a type a Cuban guitar or Laud variation (might be related to other double string Mediterranean instruments).

It is used for most of Cuban music, with or without a guitar in the group, to lay down danceable rhythms known as tumbaos, yambus, gushers and montunos.

Legend has it that it was first brought to Santiago de Cuba by Nené Mangugás, of Baracoa (primal town of Cuba). Nene was a child prodigy, creole, of Haitian decent, spotted at the age of 10 playing at the Carnaval of Santiago de Cuba in 1892.

Bissap Baobab Story

Recently relocated to 19th Street, Bissap Baobab Village embraces two distinct “huts” in San Francisco’s popular and international Mission District. Bissap Baobab, the original restaurant, has relocated to 3372-3388 19th Street, now housed in Little Baobab & Bissap (formerly Bollyhood). • Little Baobab, an intimate bistro and club, 3388 19th Street between Mission & Capp Streets serves Lunch from 11am to 2pm • Bissap (formerly Bollyhood), 3372 19th Street, a performance venue and bar, located next door to Little Baobab Baobab Village expresses the vision of founder Marco Senghor, born and raised in Dakar, educated there and in Paris. His deep knowledge and appreciation of French West African culture, food and music infuses the enticing ambiance of his establishments. Each “hut” has its own character but the two work in unison to create a sense of teranga, which can be translated from Wolof, the primary language of Senegal, to mean “hospitality,” This is where the best part of the meal is saved for the guests, neighbors take care of one another, and you are accepted for who you are. As restaurant owner, social entrepreneur, and a dedicated community member, Marco has instilled teranga into Baobab Village, transforming 19th & Mission into a multi–cultural enclave. One can truly experience the diversity of San Francisco by visiting any one of the two “huts.” •Bissap Baobab Village is composed of Little Baobab & Bissap both serving Senegalese cuisine, Afro-Caribbean food and artisan cocktails from 5pm – 10pm •Little Baobab just reopened for Lunch in May 2017 from 11am till 2pm •Bissap (formerly Bollyhood) hosts regular international dance & music performances from 8pm – 2am

Ever since first opening our doors in 1996, Bissap Baobab has brought the savory, succulent flavors of Senegal to San Francisco’s Mission District.

Our menu consists mainly of traditional Senegalese cuisine and West African specialties which have become favorites of our returning customers, whom we like to call our extended “Baobab family.”Choose from a full range of gourmet African dishes, including starters, entrees, and desserts; wash down your meal with our homemade juice drinks, one of our signature infused cocktails, or a selection of beers and spirits from all over the world.

More than just a restaurant, Bissap Baobab is a community center and San Francisco cultural institution.
