Our hearts go out to the LA community during this unimaginable tragedy. If you’re looking for a way to help from afar, we encourage you to consider donating to . World Central Kitchen is an incredible organization who shares our dedication to supporting those in need. We were proud to partner with them during the COVID pandemic to feed our SF community, and they are now on the ground in LA, providing meals to those displaced by the Eaton and Palisades Fires, as well as the heroic first responders.

As we start a fresh new year, we thought it would be the perfect time to introduce Olivia, our newest account executive at BZC! 🎉

Born and raised in Minnesota, Olivia’s passion for food started at home, learning from her mom who made everything from scratch. Her journey took her from studying in Florence, to cooking on Maui, to studying silver service in the Bahamas, to working with passionate farm to table chefs in the Bay, where she honed her skills in healthy, sustainable eating. 🌱✨
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With a background in international relations and a deep love for slow food, she’s always focused on the bigger picture—doing good with food and supporting local communities. From teaching cooking classes to volunteering for event planning, she’s worn many hats, all while bringing a hands-on, thoughtful approach to every project.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Her philosophy? “Work hard, be nice”—something she learned from both her experience in hospitality and in HR, where she helped foster positive office culture.

Now, as part of our team, Olivia brings her love for logistics, creative planning, and relationship-building to every event. When she’s not planning amazing events or creating delicious dishes, you can find her hiking, kayaking, crafting, or spending time with her cat, Lilu.

At BZC, we’re passionate about sourcing the freshest, most sustainable ingredients from an incredible network of local farms, creameries, and ranches. One of our favorites? —a certified organic farm with fields in Bolinas and Thermal. 🌱

Most of our lettuce comes from Star Route, and we especially love their amazing chicory lettuces, a winter crop that truly shines on our menus 🥬✨

Our fall newsletter is out TODAY, featuring a highlight on our new Executive Chef Joe, and one of his favorite autumnal recipes 🍂

Chef Joe attended culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago. After cutting his teeth at various French restaurants, including the seminal four-star Everest, Chef Joe made his way out to California, where he immersed himself in California cuisine through long stints at Menlo Park’s Flea Street and San Francisco’s Michelin-starred La Folie. One of our favorite facts about Chef Joe is that all of the restaurants that he has worked at were open for 30+ years, a trend that he is keeping with through his work at Betty Zlatchin Catering.

One of our other favorite facts about Chef Joe is that he is a longtime friend of our former Executive Chef, now General Manager, Dan. Chef Joe and Dan first met each other working at Flea Street over 15 years ago, and we have loved seeing this longstanding friendship evolve through their new collaboration at BZC.

When he’s not in the kitchen, Chef Joe spends most of this time with his three dogs (two basset hounds and one samoyed) and his partner Kristin at their home San Rafael. Join us in welcoming Chef Joe to the BZC family!

Happy Friday! Today, we’re highlighting Tom, our former executive chef and one of our BZC family all stars! 🌟 Tom officially retired a few years ago after an amazing 31 (!!!) years with us, but we’re lucky enough to still have him working part-time in the kitchen, bringing his signature touch to every dish.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Growing up in Oklahoma as one of nine siblings, Tom discovered his love for cooking while whipping up meals for his brothers and sisters. He made his way to SF in 1981 and soon after met Betty at an event at the . Tom still remembers the very first dish he plated for BZC—quail with pureed beet! After a sweet stint as a pastry chef at (where his chocolate cake became Betty’s fave), Tom joined us as BZC’s very first executive chef, carrying on Betty’s legacy and crafting every single custom menu until he retired.

With 35+ years in the SF event scene, Tom’s favorite venue? The iconic (though SF City Hall comes in as a close second). We couldn’t be more grateful for everything Tom’s done to shape BZC—we wouldn’t be who we are today without him. Cheers to you, Tom! 🥂 Here’s to more memories and great food together!

Today we’re throwing a big shoutout to Mark, the legend who’s been rocking with Team BZC for 25 years! Originally from sunny LA, Mark made his way to SF over 40 years ago after traveling across the country. It was here that he owned his own restaurant for 14 years before finding his calling in the catering world—and lucky for us, he never looked back. 🙌
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mark’s been our go-to guy as Facilities Manager for the past 18 years, and while he’s officially retiring this year, we’re thrilled he’ll still be with us part-time (he’s not quite ready to give up the catering magic yet 😉✨). His favorite part of the gig? Helping create unforgettable memories for our guests alongside an awesome team.

As for retirement, Mark’s excited to spend more time with his lovely wife and volunteer at the Mission Cultural Center, helping with their incredible Carnival floats. He’s mentored so many of us over the years, and we couldn’t be more thankful for everything he’s done for BZC.

We wanted to take a second to highlight one of our favorite local orgs, . This summer was our third year participating in their program, which offers paid work experience internships to local high school students. This year we were lucky to be paired with Daniel, an enthusiastic graduating senior who joined our warehouse operations team for the summer. Wesley, our DOO, put together a comprehensive work experience program for Daniel, which covered all aspects of running a small business, from sales to BOH operations. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​We want to thank EFY CEO, Carlo, for stopping by our kitchen to check in on Daniel's progress, and we wish Daniel the best of luck as he starts his first semester at San Jose State.
