In South Asian culture (sorry if I'm preaching to the choir) brides traditionally wear RED. Its considered the most sacred of colors in Hinduism and signifies auspiciousness, good fortune, and new beginnings... and it looks stunning!!

Henna looks striking with almost any color, although I usually recommend that brides opt for n**e nails. I find it flatters the overall look best, and gives length and elegance to the hands- anybody care to prove me wrong?

My assistant tells me that in Mexico monarch butterflies are believed to carry the spirits of our loved ones, and that they're also a symbol of migration and connection to cultural roots. Here in San Francisco's heavily Latino Mission District you can find them on almost every mural you see- I'm not Latin American, but I still love the idea of the neighborhood being watched over by benevolent ancestors! Maybe that why this area feels so special.

Salaam alaikum everybody! There's some new faces around here so I thought I'd pop in to say hi. I'm a Pakistani American henna and permanent tattoo artist based in San Francisco, CA, although I grew up in Chicago and spent several years living in Western Samoa. I blame (and thank) my parents for my adventurous spirit, and am constantly amazed that I've created such a rich life filled with international service, travel, and beauty.

I got my start learning traditional bridal henna from family and gave it the unique, modern twist that I'm known for. Since then I've become an advocate for "menna" (henna for men) and a trusted artist for lgbtq+ couples, as well as creating art for pregnant mothers, families of all ages, and folks at every stage of wellness and healing. My work as a bridal artist has taken me all over the world, and my new career as a permanent tattoo artist is a beloved extension of that art form and adventure.

I have lots planned over the coming months, and I'm so excited and humbled to share it with you all! In the meantime its always lovely to connect with you all in this funny little virtual space, so don't hesitate to say hi and introduce yourself :)

Did you know that there are thousandsss of nerve endings in your feet? Thats why it hurts so much when you stub your toe! Its also why applying henna, which is cooling by nature, to the feet is so soothing. Traditional henna artists were well aware of this and used it as a way to calm and relax anxious brides during the preparations for their wedding celebrations.

The tradition continues today, and just in case you were wondering- it makes your feet (and whole body) smell amazing! My personal henna paste is blended with delicious and organic essential oils that help deepen the stain while providing a nourishing aromatherapy experience.

But as I grow older, I’ve learned to embrace them…. to truly allow myself to feel them.

Favorite wedding trend of the moment: Modern brides asking that their mehndi reflect their individual paths and passions 💐👰🏽‍♀️🧬 Currently feeling pretty passionate about coffee to get this Monday morning going, but I’ll have to admit that the spiraling DNA Radhika requested, representing her career as a geneticist, is also pretty awesome! In today’s episode of Myth Busters: disproving that deep henna stains can only be achieved on light skin 🙅🏽‍♀️ Many things play into getting vibrant results, but in my experience skin color isn’t one of them! I wholeheartedly believe that black is beautiful, brown is beautiful, and beige is beautiful… and the henna agrees 🌿✨

Newest on my list of reasons to move to a tropical climate: henna stains beautifully in sultry island air 🌴

The science behind it is that the humidity and climate in tropical areas opens the pores and causes the henna to take a little longer to dry- which allows more time for it to set, resulting in a deeper stain

Common Question: Do you have a vision of what you are going to create before you create it? 👁 - The answer, Yes and No! 🙃 ::: My Creative Process in 3 steps ::: 1. I look at the body part and decide the overall shape or coverage. In this case the homie @vizualjockey had an awesome 🔻 shape - so I knew I wanted to do a mandala on top and a diamond shape attached. 2. I love starting Mandalas from the center and building out. This can be challenging, because once you start expanding from the center you have to get up and move around, so that you don’t mess up the lines you already drew. 3. Framework and Curating open spaces. The eye gravitates towards open space- so you have to make sure to consistently carry that out through your design.
