❔What is code-switching? ❔
It’s the ways in which a member of an underrepresented group (consciously or unconsciously) adjusts their language, syntax, grammatical structure, behavior and appearance to fit into the dominant culture.

Many of us do this because we want to fit in. Sometimes, we don’t even realize we are doing it.

Public speaking makes me nervous, but this is important. Let’s ask ourselves - is code-switching a burden? A skill? Why do we do it?

Last week, we were back at the St. Regis San Francisco for a roadshow in their Gallery Ballroom + Sculpture.

Ballrooms can be tricky, but we have found added lighting + natural lighting can transform a space. We love the contrast of uplights in the ballroom with the natural light that floods the networking space.

This week, we have clients staying at the stunning Jay Hotel in San Francisco 🌁

Formerly the Le Meridian San Francisco, The Jay Hotel is a newly renovated luxury hotel nestled in the serene Jackson Square neighborhood. Its design pays homage to several San Francisco icons, including the Ferry Building. We completed a site visit last week & are excited to see the completed renovation on November 15th.

For this week’s event, we worked with clients to secure a discounted room block for a team on-site. We were able to secure a nightly rate that was $150+ below the public rate 💸

At our recent Whoa Events team offsite, we took a trip down memory lane and reflected on our favorite events from the past 5 years.

Two that came to mind were a pair of offsites we were asked to plan in 6-8 weeks, from start to finish. It was the summer of 2021, and companies were looking for safe & thoughtful ways to bring their teams together post-pandemic.

Event Goals & Challenges
✨ Both of our clients wanted to bring their remote teams together to build connections & celebrate milestones
✨ Given the uncertainty of the pandemic, it felt safer to plan 6-8 weeks out vs the typical 6-8 months
✨ Asking folks to meet in-person was a huge ask, so both clients wanted a high quality, unforgettable experience for their teams

What we are proud of:
⭐ Finding the perfect venue: Even with the shorter timelines, we found perfect venues for both events that offered plenty of outdoor space & ventilation.
⭐ “Choose your own adventure”: We wanted to create memorable experiences that were still within each attendee’s comfort zone. We curated a set of “Choose Your Own Adventure” options that gave each attendee a choice!
⭐ Every little detail: An unforgettable event is in the details. Rather than viewing the shorter timeline as an excuse, we saw it as a challenge to design & produce an incredible experience on an accelerated timeline.

Today, Whoa Events turns five, and we kind of can’t believe it!

Over the past five years, we have had the privilege of:
💛 Partnering with incredible clients, ranging from corporate giants to early stage startups
👩🏻‍💻 Designing & executing 100s of unforgettable corporate events
☁️ Bringing unique, crazy & sometimes wild ideas to life

But it has not always been easy. We have had our fair share of unpredictability, including a global pandemic.

Through it all, the thing we are most grateful for is our community. Thank you to our partners, friends, clients & other event planners who have:

Ever wondered what to do with florals after your event is over?

Here are a few ways to make sure they don't go to waste!

🌷Donate them to a local hospital or nursing home! Ask your florist if they would be willing to facilitate the donation or if they know of an organization that would.

🌷Send them home with local attendees! Make sure to request vases and containers that don't need to be returned to the florist if you'd like to offer this.

🌷Ask if any venue staff would like to take them home! This is always a kind gesture to thank them for their help.

Whatever you choose, always be sure to make a plan ahead of time so they don't end up in the trash!
