Parangal and World Arts West

World Premiere! Ipat a Kadsakay captures the ritual practices of the Maguindanaon people - the largest ethnic group of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. While Islam is an important aspect of everyday life within this community, there remains ancient traditions of spirituality within the region.

Ipat is a pre-Islamic healing ritual performed in the outskirts of Cotabato City and Maguindanao. In the Maguindanaon culture, it is believed that human existence is governed by spirits or energies, called tonong. Ipat is hosted by a family or community, and led by a patutunong (shaman) who enters into trance to facilitate the interaction of spirits and people. The ritual can last from three to seven nights, with some even lasting fourteen. The ceremonial space is adorned in pandala (flags) and a hanging spirit boat called a biday.

Ipat a Kadsakay follows the life cycle of the ipat ritual - beginning with the preparation of attire and space, culminating in Kapangebat (ceremony), the preparation of the offering, the send off of the offering into the Pulangi river, and the community celebration to mark the end of the ritual.

Phantom of the Opera with Dorothy Papadakos, organ

Toccata in D Minor, BWV 565. JS Bach’s Toccata is a thrilling sonic experience for organist and audience alike. It is widely associated with all things spooky, particularly The Phantom of the Opera, who is himself an infamous ‘mad organist!’ Composed c.1705, the Toccata is improvisatory -- a fantasy with flourishes and dramatic crashing chords where organists can pull out all the stops!

The Phantom of the Opera, Universal Pictures, 1929 reissue version. Originally a 1925 feature length silent film, The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Rupert Julian, is a brilliant adaptation of Gaston Leroux's famous novel. Starring in his most famous role, Lon Chaney, the Hollywood Golden Era legend, made Phantom after his great success with The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1923.

The film’s plot takes place in 1890’s Paris. The Phantom, a mysterious cloaked figure, haunts the Paris Opera House. He causes murder and mayhem in an attempt to win the love of Christine, a rising young opera singer, by promising to make her the toast of Paris. At once a love story and a suspenseful thriller, the film showcases Lon Chaney’s extraordinary ability to evoke both terror and compassion for this complex character.

Please wear your capes & masks and come in costume as the Phantom!

SAN FRANCISCO PERFORMANCES

The Greek philosopher Plato wrote that “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”

For 45 years, San Francisco Performances has given the world’s greatest artists space and support for their ideas and imagination, empowering them to take flight through life-affirming, transcendent performances. This is a journey that we have made together, in person, as music and memories have been made before us.

We continue that journey each time we come together to experience live music. Something happens that goes far beyond the passive act of listening. We become aware of the magic and genius of creation and interpretation. We are steeped in the energy and accomplishment of those on stage. We understand a deeper and broader connection to others around us, sharing profoundly emotional experiences. The significance and power of meaningful interaction with each other affirms and restores the best of our humanity.

Join us this season for musical experiences in which we find ourselves—and each other—through the warmth of the familiar and the excitement of the new and unexpected.

Everest, the internationally renowned opera composed by Joby Talbot with a libretto by Gene Scheer, will be presented in a bold new iteration, Everest: Opera in the Planetarium. Based on the true story of a 1996 ill-fated expedition to summit Mount Everest, Everest: Opera in the Planetarium is presented in the groundbreaking medium of a powerful opera transformed into a riveting graphic novel film projected across the arched dome of the planetarium in an expansive soundscape. Audiences will climb to new heights in the immersive environment of the California Academy of Sciences Morrison Planetarium, one of the largest and most advanced all-digital domes in the world.

With a rich recording of a renowned opera cast and orchestra led by award winning conductor Nicole Paiement , the animations come to life through facial tracking technology which transform the impassioned singer's facial movements (during the time of recording) to animated graphics which track to the singer's voices. The result is a contemporary immersive operatic experience which is further enriched by the state of the art surround sound of the planetarium and comfortably reclined seats. This operatic adventure fuses vivid imagery with the visceral power sublimely recorded renowned singers and gripping orchestration, in a multi-dimensional dome environment for a truly unique experience. (This is not a live opera, but an immersive operatic experience).

This season, Alonzo King LINES Ballet honors legendary spiritual leader, composer, pianist, and harpist Alice Coltrane and the imaginative storytelling of composer Maurice Ravel through Alonzo King’s choreography.

King has been mesmerized by Coltrane’s music since he was a child—he choreographed one of his very first pieces to her work. He now returns to her body of work to create a ballet as part of “The Year of Alice,” a nationwide tribute to her legacy that includes performances and exhibits by LINES Ballet, Impulse! Records, Detroit Jazz Festival, Hammer Museum, and the New-York Historical Society. “Her musical and spiritual journey helped define and shape a life and an entire musical genre,” says Grammy-nominated harpist and composer Brandee Younger. Coltrane’s iconic works include Journey In Satchidananda (one of Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums), A Monastic Trio, Universal Consciousness, Ptah, and the El Daoud.

The Fall 2024 Season will also feature Alonzo King’s recent collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony. Here the LINES Ballet dancers delve into the enchanting world of Ravel’s 1912 suite Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose), infusing the music with a new interpretation. “I’m not trying to recreate Mother Goose fairy tales,” says King. “My intention is to unearth the deeper allegorical meanings beneath the fairy tales and illustrate those with dance.”

07/09/2024

A bevy of composers will convene for the 28th Other Minds Festival, an international annual showcase for composers held at San Francisco’s Brava Theater September 25–28, 2024.

The Festival opens with two world premiere performances of The Cello Quartet by the visionary Seattle-based media artist Trimpin, commissioned by Other Minds. The piece features three autonomous cellos perched atop moving platforms. A human cellist, Seattle’s Lori Goldston also equipped with her own moving platform, will round out the quartet while a trio of circus artists, choreographed by the Bay Area’s Margaret Fisher, will interact with the moving instruments affecting their course through wireless depth cameras embedded into the instruments.

On Night 3, we celebrate the 85th birthday of the New Zealand-born American composer Annea Lockwood with two collaborative works with trumpeter Nate Wooley and the piano/percussion quartet Yarn/Wire. Becoming Air explores a fascination with a magical sense of disorderliness, while Into the Vanishing Point was composed in response to the collapse of the world’s insect population. These works will be followed by Yarn/Wire’s performance of Both sides. Now by the Norwegian composer Jan Martin Smørdal.

On Night 4, drummer Marshall Trammell and saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh interpret graphic scores projected into the hall. The electro-percussion duo IMA (Nava Dunkelman and Amma Ateria) bring together expressionistic noise music and Japanese poetry in electrifying juxtaposition. The program will be capped off with a performance of Annea Lockwood‘s RCSC by pianist and new music champion Sarah Cahill.

Chanticleer 2024-25 Season - ON SALE NOW!

The GRAMMY® Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer has been hailed as "the world's reigning male chorus" by The New Yorker, and is known around the world as "an orchestra of voices" for its wide-ranging repertoire and dazzling virtuosity. Founded in San Francisco in 1978 by singer and musicologist Louis Botto, Chanticleer quickly took its place as one of the most prolific recording and touring ensembles in the world, selling over one million recordings and performing thousands of live concerts to audiences around the world.

Chanticleer's repertoire is rooted in the renaissance, and has continued to expand to include a wide range of classical, gospel, jazz, popular music, and a deep commitment to the commissioning of new compositions and arrangements. The ensemble has committed much of its vast recording catalogue to these commissions, garnering GRAMMY® Awards for its recording of Sir John Tavener's "Lamentations & Praises", and the ambitious collection of commissioned works entitled "Colors of Love". Chanticleer is the recipient of the Dale Warland/Chorus America Commissioning Award and the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming, and its Music Director Emeritus Joseph H. Jennings received the Brazeal Wayne Dennard Award for his contribution to the African-American choral tradition during his tenure with Chanticleer.

Named for the "clear-singing" rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer continues to maintain ambitious programming in its hometown of San Francisco, including a large education and outreach program that recently reached over 8,000 people, and an annual concert series that includes its legendary holiday tradition "A Chanticleer Christmas".

"It's like a podcast, but live on stage". Featuring award-winning writers, artists, musicians, and locals telling riveting stories that explore the relationship between music and tension.

Just as music is a series of tension and release, stories, at their core, are a sequence of unanswered questions that complicate and change over time. The desire to know what happens next — in music or a story — is ultimately what keeps us listening. While the featured stories range from humorous to suspenseful, each performance will provoke a unique perspective on the program’s theme.

So join us, for one night only, as we blend art and journalism; music and narrative; humor and drama; music and tension.
