The largest human-powered music festival in the world, the Bicycle Music Festival takes place annually in San Francisco on the Saturday closest to the summer solstice. The Bicycle Music Festival features the world's largest pedal-powered sound system (volunteers from the audience take turns pedaling bicycles in-place to create all the electricity for the stage), and a unique LiveOnBike bicycle par

ade across the city featuring live music performances from atop a bicycle-drawn stage. A 501(c)3 non-profit project of the San Francisco Parks Alliance, the BMF is free to the public (though tipping the bands is actively encouraged). The 2013 event runs from 12pm (Golden Gate Park's Old Log Cabin Meadow) - 9pm (Mission District street closure), and is an all-ages event. A full schedule of the 2013 event can be found at: www.bicyclemusicfestival.com

An open-source idea, autonomous Bicycle Music Festival's have begun to crop up around the world. Other notable BMF's include: Chico BMF, Toronto BMF, and Seattle BMF.

Band in Virginia wants to start a BMF!

Would you hop on a bike for a song or two to power our show?? Huge thanks to NPR Music & WNRN for shining a light on our bike-powered sound system. Here’s the lowdown - we’re inviting you into a big experiment with us. We don’t have everything 100% fleshed out yet, but soon enough we are going to have bicycle powered performances, in addition to our normal shows. Check the video in the article for more and keep your eyes out as we forge into the unknown.
